steve_b_wales
I went out last night with Digit, to one of his permissions. We went early so that he could show me the lay of the land. We parked on a private tarmac road, and on one side there was a field rising steeply, and on the other was a bank going down to a stream, then rising up on the opposite side. There were plenty of ewes and lambs there, and we decided to stay by the car and shoot towards either side of the road. I used my range finder to see what distances we were looking at, and then we waited until it got dark I switched on my callmaster digital caller, with the fox chip I recently purchased. Within 5 minutes, the tell tale sign of a fox came out of the ferns and headed down the bank opposite the stream, towards us. We had a job to get him to stop, as he was moving quickly from side to side. Eventually, he stopped, and, as I knew the distance was approx 180 yards, I placed the crosshairs of my Zenith scope on his shoulder. The .243, 65 grain Hornady ballistic tip found it mark, and the fox dropped stone dead. We went down towards the stream, crossed over, and looked for the fox. It took us ages to find it. It turned out to be a young dog fox. The bullet had hit it and exited through his head, A very quick and humane dispatch, and some good lamping by Digit. When we returned to the car, we shone the lamp to where the fox had dropped and the range finder read 167 yards. We called again and another cub came towards us, but was about 350 yards away. It would not come any closer, so I decided not to take the shot in case I wounded it. We decided to call it a night, and plan to go back there soon. Unfortuately, the picture attached of the cub is not very good, and the others I took are very graphic, so I've left them out. My thanks to Digit for a very enjoyable night out.
