Does anyone know when the cider apples are ripe enough to pick?

i am planning to make a batch of my own herefordshire cider, but last year i was too late

You are not ment to pick apples for cider! They should be wind falls, that way they are ripe enought to start fermenting.

Another test is you should be able to easly push your thumb into the apple.
