galkoi
Hi, we have a rescue Springer cross Cocker spaniel, Called Max. He is now 11.5 months old. We have had him for the last 13.5 weeks. He came to us with very little or no training. He was owned by an old couple, one of them being disabled, he has been ill teated. He is now settled in and coming on very well. He is now very good on and off the lead, recall is getting there. The biggest problem I am having with him is getting him to focus on me. In the garden you can keep him interested with liver cake. Once the lead is on and you’re out of the garden and away from the house, his only interest is everything to sniff and everything that moves. He will not focus on me and is not interested in ANY treat. what can i do to keep his attention on me and not everything else. He comes back to the whistle and slts or lays and then watches everything around him and not me.
Windy
does he like tennis balls? If so take one with you and use as a reward/attention grabber. If he had a miserable start to life, he might just be doing the pup thing he missed out on, particularly if he was kept locked up.

JonnyR
My cocker is now 2yrs and 3months and is exactly the same, except if I am carrying a dead pigeon or rabbit. I think the word the experts use is 'busy' ;-). Mine is a lot calmer than he used to be so it could be just a matter of time...and encouragement of course. coptleigh
Here is the recipe for liver cake, my boy loves it, and the Springer also Liver Cake Recipe 8oz Lambs Liver 2 Cloves Garlic 4oz Self Raising Flour 2 Eggs Put in blender and blend until it forms a smooth paste. Spread into a non stick baking tin i.e. swiss roll tin and put in oven Gas Mark 4 for around 45 minutes. Leave to cool and cut into small training treat sized pieces. It can be frozen. galkoi
thanks for your replys. He does like a tennis ball and treats, but as soon as you put his lead on he is not interested in anything you have, toy or treat. He will take a treat of you and just drop it on the floor. Does anyone know of a Gun dog trainer in the Sudbury Suffolk area.
activeviii
mine is just the same. has no intrest, at all, in food when the lead comes out. tennis ball, now thats a different matter. thats what i use instead of a food treat he gets a ball to play with for a minute or two, but only when he had been very good other wise its just a stroke of the ear as he is more interested in pleasing. im still struggling with a few things but every week is moving farward now to patients is needed, so im told. Phil.
