magpie wanted

Recommended Posts

Maybe so, but, they catch more efficently when fighting over territory and pairing up. Which has been and gone.

I thought you did a bit of keepering, so you should probably know that most full time keepers stopped running larsens about a month ago because they've caught the majority of the mature birds, which stopped them breeding, and the mileage doesn't justify the returns, and they are also up to their eyes in day olds, release pens, night foxing, and a hundred other things. For us lesser mortals who have the time, it is the easiest thing in the world to catch a family of young magpies in a larsen trap, which makes things a lot easier next year. The people who are asking for magpies now have probably had their call birds nicked or released by do-gooders, who knows, but what they don't need is telling that they are wasting their time, because they are not. The young magpies that survive will spend the rest of the summer taking song bird eggs and chicks in an ever more efficient way. Out of your total of 4 posts, 3 of them have been spouting **** about '' don't waste your time trying to catch magpies and crows'' If you're going to dish out advice based on your experiences, please make sure you are experienced enough, just in case anyone believes what you're saying. I've no doubt you'll come back with some gem of a post, but hey there you go. Anyone want a call bird from near Peterborough.

I can vouch for this. ~70 magpies over 60 acres in the last 2 months, been coming in at a fair rate and showing no sign of slowing

No such thing as too late for magpies, they will go in a trap all year.

There's a matter of cruelty that could get you in trouble if you are found to be keeping them out during freezing weather. (with a callbird, that is)

If you read the other call bird wanted thread you'll see that I bring them in if we have a cold spell, I don't remember the last time I had a call bird die in a trap.
