crazyfarmerboy
hello guy's, i need to fit a windscreen to a mk2 golf, i have the new glass but am unsure about how to go about it, i was quoted £105 from autoglass and that is a bit pricey as the car only cost £295, all i know is that it is a 1 piece rubber for the screen that you reuse, any help will be appriciated, thanks
MC
Is it the rubber that has an insert strip that goes on the outside? If so you will need help doing it. You will need a long enough piece of GPO rope to go all the way round the rubber plus a bit to get hold of. Fit the rubber around the edge of the screen and then feed the rope in the outer groove. Position the screen on the bodywork and with someone else pushing the screen from the outside you need to gently pull the rope from inside the car. This with then pull the inner part of the rubber past the metal body and position the glass. The insert strip on the outside is where the fun really begins and you will need a special tool to put that in.
crazyfarmerboy
ok that sounds like a bit off a job, i want to give it a go myself because the insurance excess is £100 so if the windscreen gets broken autoglass will be back with a new one, How do you take the olf windscreen out without smashing it? ME
The old windscreen is laminated, just do what MGMan said. I have seen this done very easily, those Autoglass boys arent rocket scientists

crazyfarmerboy
that is crazy, shows how much they rip off the insurance company's, i got my windscreen for £10 from a chap breaking the same car and luckily it was the rubber seal and no bonding glue was required
