Guided (like GPS !) Roe Buck stalking

Had my own guided GPS to get this one !

Was out on Friday with a couple of mates after Roe Bucks and I was happily sitting up on my designated third of the ground when the walkie talkie goes "Andy, where are you?". My mate had bumped a Buck and pushed it 300 yards from him & from where he was it was more or less skylined.

So he kindly invited me to approach from the other direction - on the ridge.

I'd just sat down after a mid afternoon 1 1/2 hour stalk and was looking to cool off after overheating. Dressed to stay out til dark and it was around 4:00pm....a bit hot.

Oh well, that's what we're here for. I did ask my mate why he didn't want the Buck and after he explained I was off.

A field, crunchy gravel path & two barbed wire fences later....I was getting close, and hot again.

I could see my mate at the woodland edge in the valley so that was one thing I didn't need to concern myself with...his location.

He asked if I could see the Buck, mmmmm, "No" so he explained it's location.

He had a clear view, I had a load of thistles and cover in the way. After scanning with the Bins for 5 mins, I thought I caught an antler move, but with a gentle breeze moving the cover I couldn't be sure.

My mate then said it had just sat down!

No chance of me spotting it now so I had to stalk a little closer. The wind direction was ok and the gentle breeze was enough to cover my movement. At 40 yards I saw the tips of his antlers move. Watched those for 5 mins and he was settled. I had too much cover in front of me and didn't fancy getting much closer. To the side cover was lower so I started side stepping, with the rifle up on sticks - moving sticks and myself in tiny steps in some kind of crab crawl, all the while watched by my mate.

At this point a buck gets up just by my mate - he later tells me some 20 yards away -, I see his rifle come up but that Buck is not stopping and exits the field.

I take a few deep breaths, my Buck had not been aware of the movement due to the undulating land. I keep side stepping, eventually I get to the point where I can see an eye, and head and part neck. No time to ponder, my mate, although in a safe area is now behind a tree. Good, I take the shot. One Roe Buck in the bag.
