Harnser
Went out on the rape stubble today . A field of about 40 acres with a nice hedgerow around 3 sides .I set up under an ash tree that is used a lot by the pigeons as a sitty tree . I started off with 20 flocked coys and the magnet . The wind was behind me and surprisingly it was quite a stiff blow . I had the coys in the proverbial horse shoe pattern and the magnet slightly in front and to the left of the coys . There were several birds moving around the field but would not commit to the coys . Decided to move the magnet to the back of the coys and off to the right . Same thing ,nothing prepared to commit to the coys although i did manage to shoot 2 crossing birds . I then decided to take the bull by the horns and take the magnet in altogether . Within 5 minutes i had my first bird over the coys . It then started to turn into a good days shooting . After taking in the magnet the birds just started to come in regulary . I set the first half dozen birds up on cradles and started to shoot some nice birds over the coys . I decided to use my sxs sidelock gun today with 25 gram no 6 shot . What a devestating combo this was . I was killing the birds clean from between 25 and 45 yards using improved cyl and quarter choke . The moral to the storey is ,dont be afraid to take the magnet in if the birds wont commit to the coys . I finished up with 74 picked birds . A very enjoyable day . I had a walk round the lake and I think that we have an otter in residence ,I didnt see him but there was the remains of about 6 fresh water swan mussels on the bank . I carnt think of any thing else that would take these mussels out of the lake ,crack them open and eat them . Unless a mink would . Dos any body know if a mink would feed on fresh water mussels ? .
