.22lr subsonic info

Recommended Posts

Need a bit of help if possible. I've been using remington target rounds in my 10/22 lately (with great results) but remembered last night i had about 150 subsonics (50 eley and 100 cci cb long's). i decided to check them out on the ballistics calculator i use to see how they compare to the remmys, so i could maybe use them up. i tried looking at the boxes but they gave very little info (the eley one had no info at all, the cci just said 29, long cb) so looked up a few rimfire ballistics tables on the net, and heres the info i got.

remington target - bullet weight 40gr bullet, muzzle velocity 1150 (which i already knew)

eley xp sub - bw 37.5gr, mv 1050 (im assuming these are the ones i have, didnt give the name or anything on the box)

cci cb long - bw 29gr, mv 727

does this look right to everyone else? a 323 fps muzzle velocity difference between two brands of subbies? :good:

if these figures are correct then it seems eley subs follow quite a similar trajectoy to the remmys, but the cci's look dire!

CB longs are a specialist cartridge and as such you can't compare them to a standard subsonic. CB longs don't have any powder in them- they use the priming compound for propulsion.

And yes you will still get a lot of variation between brands because they are made to different standards. At 20 C and sea level the speed of sound is 1125 fps. So the remmy's you have listed at 1150 aren't going to be subsonic. However, each company will set a different speed for their subs because they will assume a different speed of sound in air (as it varies with temperature). To be safe, 1050-1080 is about as fast as you can go without occasionally going over the speed of sound at some point during the year.

thanks,

rick

should have pointed out i know the remmy's arent subs, i got a few different ammo types a while back to try out and still had the eleys and cci, didnt realise the cci's had no powder :good:

looks like ill be using them as fodder for the 30 round mags then :drinks::)
