just got in from a night out with deadeyedduck ,lamping foxes....

tonight was beautiful.....a warm breeze and very calm .....

we went up to one of our permissions so don could give me more training on the lamp whilst he was manning the .223

its been a gentle learning curve but i think im doing alright. i guess some of you may think no big deal, theres not much to it ?.... but i reckon theres alot you can do wrong and if done right the lamping can be as much fun as the shooting...

we took a walk round the land, carefully treading over the noisy rape stubble and following the tramlines as best we could....

pretty early on in the session, we walked around and then over the motorway bridge and over into some of the other fields only for our stealthy efforts to be shattered by a farm hand dropping off a trailer for the next days retrieval of the bales they'd rolled today.... dammm it !!!

so off we trekked back over the other side of the motorway and into the rape stubble again... first field, just a few rabbits and a quick head count lets us know how were doing where them critters are concerned....

next field, a quick squeak and a flash round with the lamp and all seems quiet again.... lamp off, another squeak and lamp flash reveals a twinkle of yellow eyes, at my amazement only 30 yards away !!!!!!!! i quickly dropped the lamp beam to the forground around 10-15 yards below the eyes and they remain there, glinting at us not quite sure of what is making the squealing noise...(hee hee, if only he knew...) don quickly dropped to knee but the ****** took off.... like a bolt...... i tracked him with the lamp, carfully not putting the beam right on him.... he ran around 100 yards ,maybe more...and i gave a shout....he stopped to look again... i turned the lamp off and began to squeak again. we quickly but quietly stalked forward around 30 yards...

i turned the lamp back on and quickly scanned the area he went down in....there he was.. a few more squeals got his attention and again, i dropped the beam so's to make him think he was not in the light... don dropped to his knee and quickly took the shot.

it was a great shot, dropped him like a cocaine addict from an iceland advert.....

i pair of grins and a quick hand shake later we were on our way over to retrieve one dead charlie....

sorry we didnt have a camera, he was a fine specimen, one of this years stupidly naive cubs...

we went on over to the other fields and following the usual squeals and flash round with the lamp, quickly spotted another pair of eyes... these ones belongs to a large adult fox. again i dropped the beam and to our surprise, another pair of eyes in the night....!!

with two foxes to raise the excitement stakes i tried my best to keep both pairs of eyes illuminated yet out of the beam so we could pick the first volunteer... but the eyes started to run in opposite directions... on dons instructions i followed the pair which were closest.... but they too began to run like the clappers towards the hedge...

don called as i tracked charlie ..for a moment he looked like he was coming in but he soon got on to us and took of...... it was clear he'd been lamped before....

oh well, you cant win em all....

anyways, a great night out... and great mentor helping me out as usual.....

cheers don...

matty :D

Sounds like you had an enjoyable evening, we to have recently got back in from a nights lamping again an attempt to bring in charlie, i'd have to say tonight should have been successfull but my shooting let us down :D:lol: , two squeeked in well but alas i need more experiance with the 223, never the less it was a good evening like you said the weather was superb and the fact they came in to within 80 yds was really exciting, i'd blame myself for having the first time jitters and missing them both. But still its all experiance and hopefully will help next time.:D:angry:

Matty is doing great - he actually listens to what you tell him, and you can't hope for more than that... I've taken a few out from PW, and some know more than me after 10 minutes....

It was a good night, and we would have got three but for very high rape stubble that meant I could not use a bipod. It was also damn noisy, but that's shootin' - as was the wrong wind direction for the last two foxes.

Still, one shot and one very dead fox - you can't wish for more than that.

The other two are still there for another night.
