henry d
The varmint has a heavy barrel and a **** stock, well a **** looking stock as it does the job. It also has the flattened wider fore-end and the cheek-piece. As for scope, what can you afford ?
cluais
I plan to spend 400-500 for a scope
Glensman
second hand Schmidt and Bender 8x56 for about £320? When I was thinking of going for a Tikka that's what was going on top!
Baldrick
I've had two T3 Varmints. As Henry says, they are damned heavy and somewhat poorly balanced (generally speaking they are cracking rifles). Do you need that heavy barrel, or are you buying on looks alone? A Schmidt & Bender 8x56 is not the scope for long-range rabbit shooting. The reticle is thick enough to obscure a rabbit-sized target at more than 200 yards. When you state 'long range', what kind of distance are you meaning? 300 yards, 500 yards, 800 yards? If you are looking to shoot accurately and consistently at >300 yards, you need a fine reticle and plenty of magnification, 14x mag as a minimum. You have to bear in mind that a high-mag varminting scope (e.g. Leupold VX3 6-24x56) will be nowhere near as capable for general lamping use as a S&b 8x56. Glensman
Baldrick, Couldn't agree more! Although S & B do a varmint reticule, you never see then second hand...
