Topgunners
Sunday morning I awoke at 04.15 and rang Alan to make sure he was up and he arrives at my house at 04.45 and we set off in pursuit of the deer and fox. We arrived at the destination about 05.30am and swiftly reaches our pre-planned vantage point. We are at the top of a mound with a lake and a wood to our right and a high bank straight in front of us. We could see right up the hill in the distance behind the bank and the usual rides within 300yards either side of us. We sat there scanning with the binos and scopes but unfortunately nothing was playing ball. Then out behind us we heard the cries of a flock of geese and I crept up to the hedge and there were about 100 geese feeding on the stubbles The lead goose was up on his hind legs and squawking like a good un, and I knew any time now they were about to take off. I crept back to the mound and a minute or two later they took off in four skeins and headed out over the lake and through a gap in the trees. Definitely will have 4 guns spread about the lake and woods this week. We then went back to the jeep and went mooching for some pigeons. The first field I turned into and stopped ; looking down the hill and there was a fox about 200yds away, just on the edge of a hedgerow. Alan quickly slipped the rifle from the sleeve and bolted one in and took the shot, Unfortunately, he missed by an inch or so. Didn't give enough allowance for the cross wind. Another day perhaps. We then travelled round for the next few hours and couldn't find birds anywhere. We even bumped into 2 other jeeps with shooters in and they had said the same thing. No birds about. We ended up nearer our home area and managed to find a few flighting in to some wheat stubbles. We set up 2 magnets and 20 deeks and by 6.00pm we had 38 in the bag. Monday I was out on my own as Al had to work and I went back to the wheat stubbles and set up 2 fields away from sunday's field. It was very slow but steady and I ended up with 63 shot. All in all ; not too bad a bank holiday but the birds are very scarce at the moment. Ducks and geese to try for this week. Dave K
