high speed steel is the stuff if your gun is proofed and your bank account is of normal proportions, remington do a couple of **** hot ones or winchester drylocks, better still find a mate who reloads steel and nik some of his, just make sure the gun is upto the job

I think the answer to your question depends on a number of factors, especially:

1. What type of gun do you use?

2. How many cartridges do you anticipate using?

My gun only takes 2¾" cartridges and I probably only shoot about 30 cartridges a year at geese. So, although it is horrendously expensive, I use Express Hevi-shot. The 31gm load of 3s costs £66.90 for 50 and is absolutely deadly. If I was shooting 100s of shells a year at geese (God Forbid!) then the cost would rule out Hevi-shot.

The original steel shot cartridges were very poor in performance terms but the more recent "high performance" steel is much better. But you do really need a 3" or 3½" gun proved with the steel shot fleur de lys proof marks. Remington Hi-speed steel in 3" cartridges is around £12.99 for 25.
