Tirxie is Home!! Couple of Questions Spay Related

Little background.

Both my ESS and Lab went in for a male and female castration last Wednesday. The Lab (Trixie) is 15 months and has been sold to us by a reputable breeder/trainer. Up until today they have kept her whilst we visited them over the last 3 weeks or so to get some bonding/integration with my ESS.

Aero (the ESS) has gotten over the operation and you would not know he has had it. The same goes for Trixie which is amazing given that she had a Major Op. As you can see from the picture below she is being crated for her own protection. What we did no want was the 2 dogs playing too much and Trixie rupturing her internal stitches. Having said that we did let them see each other for 10 mins, and to be honest, apart from Trixie showing my 4 year old ESS that she is the boss by biting his ear a few times they have been good as gold. They are playing, but nothing rough.

Now the vet suggested 10 days before the dogs were allowed together for any length of time but he did say "You know your own animals"

Would any of you guys and girls have any advice regarding letting Trixie out of the cage for longer periods? Should we keep doing what we are doing? Will she be alrightwithout the cage (unless we are going out and over night)

What do think?

Cheers All

Simple fact is - all that is keeping her insides in are the vets' stitches. She must not run off the lead, jump up or fight with the other dog.

I have seen wounds break down and it's not pretty.

They mustn't play but if they will sleep quietly or go for a lead walk together that's fine.

Even after 10 days (and skin stitches out) you need to build things up gradually as it can take a month for the abdomen to be back to full strength!

Carry on as you are

I kept mine in longer then the 10 days as the Mitzys took longer to heel.

But i did let her out with my other dog as long as i was in the room to keep the eye on them together.

Did the vet give you one of those big collar thingys?.

My springer had one on at all times as she would not leave her place alone . She was always trying to clean it . :good:

O and if you do have one watch out for the back of your legs.

It DO HURT. :good:

We not not get a space collar Suz.

Trixie has licked her scar once and was told off by her previous owner, she has not touched it since.

Aero licked his twice, got barked at by me, not done it again.

They have had their play session for today, we let them have 5 mins or so together. Then trixie has 15 mins each hour out of the Crate with no Aero around.

She is good, she will go to toilet and drink on command. Never had a dog do that before. the toilet thing is right handy :good:

She is settling in nicely. We let them have 5 mins this morning with each other. They really want to play so we had to put a stop to it. But, they have had another 5 mins and she see's all that's going on from the crate.

She is still coming out without aero around every 45 mins.

All's going well.
