nhamm2
Guys - your help and expertise needed please. Next month (Oct 23-30) to be precise, I am heading with the family up to Kircudbright, Galloway and Dumfries, for the week. I was hoping to sneak off for a few hours to enjoy some of the amazing wildlife and fieldsports on offer, but don't really know where to start. Must say first up that money is tight so am looking for value here, if it's possible to find. I would love to try my hand at stalking, although am a novice. I would also relish the chance for a rough shoot, goose or duck flight, chance at snipe or woodcock - anything really to get me out there! In an ideal world, I would be borrowing a gun as I would prefer not to travel on the train with my shotgun and ammo, two kids and a wife being more than enough to deal with Hope you might be able to point me in the right direction so I can make the most of this opportunity. Also posted in another section, not sure which was most suitable. Thanks in advance for any advice you are able to offer.
pavman
as long as you have access, tidal wildfowling below the high water mark is legal and free in Scotland as far as I know, also farmers are quite open to you Goose shooting if they are on the crops, its a case of presenting yourself with the old,,,, seen a few geese on that field may i help whilst i am here, some make a small charge (cant blame them) but you should always offer somthing... as for Deer and rough people make a living out of it as they do anywhere so expect to have to pay £££ I go with friends most years when the pinks arrive, it may be worth having a rekky this time and go at it proper next time? henry d
as long as you have access, tidal wildfowling below the high water mark is legal and free in Scotland as far as I know.... The area at Caerlaverock, south of Dumfries is an NNR, iirc, so you may need a permit there.
fortune82
I am originally from Dumfries and used to do a bit if wildfowling on the Solway. The Nature reserve at Caerlaverock is permit only but these can be obtained by contacting Scottish Natural Heritage, their offices used to be on the Crichton Business Park, Dumfries. If you go to Brow Well on the Solway it is free to shoot there and has produced some good morning flights for myself and friends. Brow Well is a few miles from Annan. Also remember you can still use lead shot on inland wildfowling in Scotland!! For Stalking Annandale Estates has Fallow Deer galore, their stalker is called Bert Robertson, have a look on their website. Hope this helps Paul
