dead-eye-dick
I am intending to shoot a field tomorrow in which the rape had been 'sprayed', but in it's bent over stage is still 1.5 feet high. I have seen alot of activity going to-and-from a large tree near one edge. When in such a field do you fine fellows:- A. find a clear patch to set decoys in, B. set decoys standing above the crop for ease of vision or C. not use decoys but 'ambush' birds as they fly past.. Malc
Rape is very vulnerable in the state you describe. Even the slightest disturbance will knock the rape seed out of the pods and it will be lost to the combine harvester. Shooting over sprayed rape means any shot birds that drop in the rape cannot be retrieved by man or dog without disturbance to the crop. Setting out decoys will cause similar disturbance. Will the farmer be pleased?? It is sometimes possible to shoot over swathed rape laid in rows to dry without causing undue disturbance. Personally, I'd wait, then get stuck in to the stubble. Cranfield
Dead-eye, Malc is 100% right. Don,t you have any swathed rape available ? I saw some around Hempstead last week, it may not have been on your land though. If nothing else , ambush ,em.
dead-eye-dick
Unfortunatly I was unable to read your report due to a tecnical failer But that is exactly what I did, I just hid myself away and when a pigeon flapped past I popped out and took a shot. I managed 5 birds from 20 shots in 2 hrs not bad for a first year beginner?? (very tasty they were too..) The problem I have been having is that there is no actual flight line, pigeons seem to fly all across the field from all over the place.....although they do fly in one genral direction...... Do you think the much-talked-about magnet would help..see post in "New Gear" Anyway thanks for advise over the last month or two....I really enjoyed that morning and felt more confident that I was able to find the birds, build a hide and shoot them...... although you can never be one step ahead of them it is the start I needed and i'll be able to progress from there.. 8)
