Deer feeder

We put out the blue plastic barrel spring feeders on our game syndicate - and the deer can't keep off 'em.

We are changing all the plastic barrel feeders to steel as a consequence (and to keep the rats off and out).

They will ignore and bypass electric fences, barbed wire, feeders tied to fence posts with wire... the lot. If they can't get the spring off they will charge the barrels to knock them over and get the lids off.

We regularly have the plastic feeders actually "punctured" by deer antlers from ramming and charging. Now, I couldn't manage to puncture one of these barrels with a decent sharp sheath knife and with a run up.

I would suggest anything that can hold grain and keep it stored dry and which dispenses on demand.

I have just made two of these .

We have a lot of Roe come to the pheasant spring feeders every year.So I thought I would give them one of their own ! lol

Real easy to make (plastic sewer pipe ) with a 45% bend fitted to the bottom .

Attach them high enough so the pheasants and rabbits cant reach .

I am putting wheat in one and barley in the other and see what happens .

I will also be fitting a reconyx trail cam to see the difference in the bucks over the season and into the new year .

The pictures are from an American trail cam site.

Mine are orange/brown but the same style .

Hillbilly , baiting deer is frowned up on by many and I dont know if it is actually legal . But why not , We use decoys for pigeons ,ground bait for fish . I know a farmer who uses bails of hay and buckets of apples to get the deer close to his high seat . Is waiting for them to come into the orchard any different to putting down a bucket of windfalls ?

If I can get them to leave the pheasant feeders alone I will be happy enough !

Just a point to remember, When the bucks start ,they are on to the new growth and dont bother with the feed area.

Plus , my feeders are inside the edge of the wood and once the cover comes on the trees ,you cant see them anyway !

My main aim is to get the trail cam working and get some decent pictures.

Just to clear a point here !

If anyone is feeding deer(whatever species ) minerals etc, to improve the overall health .Then I don't see any problem with that .Lots of estates/parks do over winter and it isnt a big deal .

But if the feeding is to try and concentrate them into an area and shoot them like fish in a barrel, then I am certainly not up for that idea ?

It makes the STALKING aspect a bit pointless.

Each to their own I suppose? but not for me .(just my opinion)

And there in lies the problem it's not everyone's idea of what deer stalking should be, not what is legal or not. Pheasant shooting is legal, and they are reared, fed and driven, pigeons, large numbers are decoyed and shot, foxes are called lamped and shot/ trapped, but to do the same with a deer, tut tut. As I have stated before on this forum ALL animals deserve the same respect

im not sure if your agreeing with me here or not im quite confussed :good: either way your all entitled to your opinion and im not going to diss agree but as i said the wood has a cattle field behind it a motor way to the left so my high seats are pointed in the correct safe direction but the deer mooch around near the motor way were they have food and water so if i can give them a better food and water source then i can save not only a few motorists but also save the wood from over population
