Hi

Has anyone shot here and what are the targets like, basically can anyone provide a review. We are still very much beginners and anything over 50% is good for me?

On another note,

I am off to my local ground for a bit of practice this afternoon and I am going to try the maintained lead method. I normally shoot pull away or swing through. I am led to believe that the Move mount shoot method will help on the pairs as I seem to run out of time for the second bird any tips? Oh I am left eye dominant and shoot right handed and close one eye just before I pull the trigger . Will this make much difference with the maintained lead method??

Yes I have shot there many times, and in my humble opinion it is a very good shoot.

It varies (which is the important bit) so it can be better sometimes than others.

If you have shot anywhere else locally, apart from Hornet I would say the birds at V V will seem harder.

I wouldn't be disappointed with 50% as a beginner,

If people ask to come out with us as beginners I wouldn't take them there, as I feel (might be wrong) you are better off hitting a few and then stepping up to the tougher shots. It is easy to get despondent if you miss too many early on in your shooting life, and worse still later on in your career <_<

I'll leave the method questions to those who can shoot a bit...

Well I shot there the weekend. I was very poor indeed missing two stands completely and only scored 1 on another. Couldnt read the targets more of a poke and hope, had no idea of where I was missing, not sure if I was mounting the gun correctly especially on the really high birds..... etc etc

Totally gutted

Consider me despondant

Well, you shouldn't be too despondant, we all started shooting at pretty much the same level, if you'd have gone out and shot 100 straight it wouldn't have been much of a challenge..?? :good:

You need to watch a good shot in action, note his stance, foot position, gun hold point, most beginners shoot their birds far too late because they're holding the gun in the wrong place and also failing to pick up the bird early enough.

If you're serious about getting anywhere in the sport, book a lesson or two with Nathan Dudley at Holland and Holland in Northwood, he'll teach you the basics and soon get you breaking more clays.

Also, shoot a bit of skeet to get used to swinging the gun, get along to West London Sporting Targets on a Saturday afternoon, speak to Andy Castle there, he'll help you out.

I would agree with Cat here, that a lesson would help no end, get the basics checked like gun fit and get your mount consistent and you should be well away.

As it turned out we were there yesterday as well, all I will say is quite a few of the 'longer' ones were actually midi's so not as far off as they seemed.

Some fairly decent shots get down there (not us) so if you are squadded with them don't be afraid to ask where they think you are missing, most people will be happy to help out.

Thanks very much for the replies

I shoot at andy castles on occasion, really good club by the way :hmm: and have had a lesson at churchills. But out at

competitions when you have to judge the target for the first time I am way off, so much so that I dont have a clue where I am

and then start repeating the same shot over and over. Probably far too tense in the stand :good:

The same thing happened at stoke poges almost as if putting too much pressure to break the target. Very confused!

I did try skeet there and was woeful as I was not quick enough???

I shot at the the sporting layout at the opposite end to the club house on Friday and on our third attempt after a cup of tea to

chill I managed 22/25.

Admittedly the targets were not that far away.

Hi Catamong

I took your advice and contacted Holland and Holland. Unfortunately I couldnt meet their price of £156 per hour,

including carts and clays.

However I have since found a CPSA Instructor who may be able to help. :good:

Did you manage to find out the scores of Valley View?

Did you manage to find out the scores of Valley View?

Why do you think you might have won? :good:

I didn't want to say this but by their standards that wasn't a hard layout, so scores were predictably high.

I used to shoot there , but I found it a bit cleeky , I know the guy that runs it . It is not cheap , mind you Clay shooting is'nt ,I live in BUCKS myself and used to shoot regularly at a place near Gerrards Cross , Iam looking for some informal Clay shooting in the Chiltern area. FARM BOY

I have shot at the one near gerrards cross. Became a bit frustrating as the traps kept breaking down and loads of no birds.

Also in my inexperienced opinion it could do with a few more roped off areas looked as though it would be easy to wander in the wrong direction.

It isn't cheap, it's £30/100 birds now, but when you have wasted half of your morning at some other local shoots with busted traps/no birds/birds hitting trees and then back to the broken stands that have now got 30 pee'd off shooters waiting at them, you will wish you paid the extra. There was one minor issue at V V last time I went, and it was sorted in minutes.

I would rather go there once than the others 2 or 3 times, I haven't been to the Denham one, but I hear it is OK.

At vv I dont think I saw one no-bird in a squad of six.

Denham has just been made a 100 bird. I took my son this weekend. I think its around 25 quid there were a few no-birds as the clays were hitting the electricity cables! But its a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Im told its a fairly easy shoot
