Air rifle scopes

Can a rifle scope be used on an airgun?

I bought a new one yesterday for an HW90 that i acquired last week. A pal has said that the recoil of an airgun neccesitates an airgun specific scope and that a live round scope will get wrecked in no time.

Is this correct? I told the bloke in the shop exactly what i was after so i'll be a bit hacked off if mis-bought.

Cheers gents.

There are scopes that are specifically airgun rated. Having said that, most sub 12 springers aren't hard on scopes, gas strut rifles can be tougher. FAC rated springers can be rough on scopes.

Look at the specs of the scope on line, check with the vendor if you're not sure. Personally I would just carry on.

I've used cheap and expensive scopes on springers, and I can't say I've noticed any difference. Some brands do advertise air gun-specific scopes, but personally I think it's just a selling point to attract unknowing beginners.

I had a few problems with an old BSA Lightning, which was very twangy and clunky, and the scope just wouldn't hold a zero, but I realised that it was due to the very poor two-piece mounts which were shifting around.

I could be wrong, but I think most scopes labelled as airgun specific are so because either their reticles are designed with the trajectories of air rifles in mind, or they're not built to the same resilience as scopes for rifles. As far as I'm aware, there's no reason why a scope used for a powder burner can't be used on an air rifle, although zeroing might be tough if the elevation is designed for high velocities.

What scope did you get?

A 1.5-6x44 nikko sterling gold crown.

I tried zeroing it earlier, couldnt get a grouping but had nowt to do with the scope. I was shaking like a whippet having a pony.

I have owned a hw80 spring gun at 45ftlb and many centrefire live shots and i can tell you the kick from an airgun is no where near the kick of a live shot whoever told you this does not know what he talking about

If you want a good scope for a spring gun i can thoroughly recomend a simmons whitetail classic 3.5_10_50 absolutely brilliant scope on an airgun cheers ben

The main point that always gets raised is that a springer has a double recoil ....... one when the sear releases, and the other in the opposite direction when the piston stops at the end of the cylinder, and it's this double-recoil that is supposed to damage scopes.

Does it? No idea.
