My old man suffers with arthritis and wants a sub 12ft/lb air rifle to knock over magpies and squirrels in the garden. He would struggle with a break barrel or underlever so is looking at PCP or compressed gas. Air rifles are a bit of a mystery to me; are the co2 ones with canisters any good for live quarry? With PCP, could he use a compressor to fill the rifle bottle rather than getting a shop to fill a dive bottle? He has one at home from his farming days. Any guidance appreciated.

If you're in northern Shropshire and would like him to be able to have a shoot with one, I've got an Air Arms S410 in 22 that he could certainly have a go of - though please note I'm NOT interested in selling it. Would be happy to bring it over for him to have a play with.

He could grab a Hatsan At44-10 for £350 inclusive of moderator and scope if you shop about. It's not a bad little PCP air rifle for what it is. Very easy to operate and fairly accurate for its price point, no fiddling about loading and easy to access the magazine especially if he has arthritis. I don't own one but have shot one a few times at my clubs range and never had any issues using it.

For the money you can't really go wrong.

Had been looking at the hatsans and wondered if one would do the job. It'll likely get used a few times at a weekend maximum so he doesn't need a weirauch or anything like that. Just something that works and is accurate. Good to know they aren't fiddly either. At the game fair for the next couple of days so will have a look around.

The Hatsan AT44 is a good gun, good loading mech for the money and as accurate as you need. I had one for a long while and loved it.

However, if your father has arthritis, I would say that the AT44 is a fairly heavy gun - so may be worth looking at a lighter second hand Airarms.

My mate picked up a decent second hand Brocock in .177 which was about £300 with scope and mod. Good to look about,

The AT44s are not that heavy! Partridge Guns and Country Store at Whaplode and Country Sporting Guns at Brothertoft carry Hatsans so you can go there and ask to have a feel as it were. The Hatsan is more than capable of squirrel bashing. Game Fairs are not the place to buy an air rifle. The prices are not that good sometimes even more than the shops are (people get bargain blindness, like SMK B2s with a 4x20mm scope for £99, yes I did see it and yes I did have hysterics laughing at the price)! Just research the prices before you go and remember the world will not end if you do not buy an air rifle from the show!

Forget CO2, like some people say they are to unstable. PCP is the way forward. I've got a hw100 and I love it but if is to much for your budget s200 is a good choice. Also my previous pcp was a logun axsor in .22 and was extremely accurate and light weight. I did bought it for £300 with a diving bottle included.
