tony-devon
Greetings all probably seen before maybe? but I thought that I would share this with you all. this is what happens when you dont look after a moderated shotgun! looks lovely and it is in fact in excellent condition, Fabarm sporting alloy frame, adjustable trigger, stock etc etc, trigger is lovely to use, its a very nice gun BUT check out the barrels? I have fired it, put several cartridges through it to be honest, but it was fired from a fixed rest. they might be perfectly safe, but sure dont look pretty LOL I have sandblasted the area to get the black corrosion away. I bought it cheap for spares knowing the condition of the barrels, but hope that you all remember to check them before buying a used one! vampire
Is this due to the barrells sweating under the moderator
njc110381
That looks nasty! I guess I was lucky when I bought mine the other day? I stripped it down the day after to give it a clean and although full of crud it was still very tidy once cleaned up with wire wool (the only thing I could find to shift the baked on muck!). fluke2
This needs a gunsmith to check the wall thickness on the worst pitted areas, Ive seen a gun blow the barrels that didnt look this bad and if any northern lads here remember it hung on the wall in bradford and stalker as a warning for years, get it checked mate if your gonna use it
tony-devon
yes it does look nasty, I have used a steel rule and feeler guages, majority of the damage goes about 6 thou down, but the visual of it is horrible, its sort of honeycomb effect I am wondering about submitting them for proof and seeing what happens to them, be interesting? would like to know if they would withstand a proof load? its very annoying as inside its like mirrors, the action is tight and smooth, barely any marks inside the action from use. but the point of this message was that if just one person takes the gun apart before buying, then hopefully they will stay safe trying to find a set of barrels so I can put it back into service as my clay gun my old semi auto for clays is ok, but it looks like a piece of ****, and it kicks as hard as the o/u's so might as well use one LOL although the semi will take 5 carts, could proove useful one day on a troublesome stand LOL
fluke2
nasty looking damage would certainly frighten me,get your point about cleaning properly and Ill bet a few are checking now once bought a sxs that was badly worn like this and you could flex the barrel by pressing hard on it,was going to cost over 600 to sleeve it so gave it up for spares. sitsinhedges
The standard blueing on moderated guns seems to keep the rust largely at bay but it seems that if the blue is damaged they can rust quite easily. I cured a patch by using nail varnish once it had a dose of Kurust. Keeps the air and moisture out so rust doesn't reform
tony-devon
these barrels arent blued, they have the same coating as the rest of the gun, some sort of sprayed on titanium coating, its strong and effective in my experience, but obviously not very effective in this application I have already been given a price for a new set of barrels, to suit for clay busting, and its twice maybe 3 times the value of the gun when complete so looks like I will be cutting the woodwork up to fit my semi auto, and gutting the action for springs and curly wot nots
