  1. The Hornet is best home loaded. Then you get double the power for free as they cost a similar amount to load as HMR factory rounds. If you're mainly shooting rabbits then you may as well stick with the HMR but if you think you'll see a few foxes rather than the odd one then the Hornet comes into it's own. It's not as big as the larger centrefires and is mild to use. It works to a very similar trajectory to the HMR but can easily kill a fox out to 150 yards. 100 yard foxes with a HMR are risky at best - I've tried it and had runners and I'm not a bad shot. I just don't trust it on animals larger than rabbits.

To make full use of a Hornet you need to be a keen home loader as well as shooter. But if you're willing to put the time in it has a lot more to offer than the rimfire without having to up the size and weight of the rifle/moderator etc. At the same time if you're very much a grab some bullets and shoot stuff kind of bloke then the Hornet isn't for you - not unless you want to spend a fortune on ammo.

Edit - the Hornet is also considerably better in the wind than the HMR due to the heavier bullets.

with a heavy bullet what range can you safely drop a fox at...........

  2. I have an Anschutz 1517 in 17HMR flavour. It is a class wee caliber. The ammo it likes is CCI 20grain gamepoint and Federal V-Shock 17grain. It is pinpoint accurate at 100 meters ie about an inch or less groups, It can shoot much further. At 150 meters the rounds drop about 2 inches. But still has good groups but open up to about 2 inches. I use it on Crows, magpies, pigeons, bunnies etc to good effect at these ranges. Foxes I would only do close range, less than 100 meters. Definately recommended rifle

out of interest can you list the caperbilities of the 177hmr and the 22hornet such as effective ranges and type of quarry you are using them on, and downside of the 2 calibres

I know you cannot compare one against the other

  4. if you are going to pitch for a lab....try and find a line that has Laffiette Tolley in it, trailers hate them as the hunt and move too fast, all my dogs have that strain in them and they hunt hard especially the bitches, it will give you the steadiness in the hide and at the peg, but will give you the speed if you are out netting...dont overfeed them keep them so a couple of ribs are showing....

friend of mine has a cross springer spaniel X terrier....hunts rats and rabbits and is a really good retreiver.......

  5. ive still got mine after 45 years, its not the deluxe model just plain without the chequering....had the barrell polished and re-blued...gunsmiths love doing them because the quality of the metal is so good and it takes the blueing so well....always use eley furlong 5 or 6

  6. points taken, i see the winch everyday as a mate has it on the company crew cab pickup...the crew cab is going to auction this spring witout the winch and bumper.!..the bumper and winch were fitted and supplied by a l/rover agent, so it should be a decent make, the cable is dirty but free of broken wires and kinks

will get a decent 2nd battery from the scrappy and order up a new split charger and isolater

cheers for the advice boys and girls

  7. would love a hydraulic winch but this winch is free with a bumper...so is cheap............what im trying to say is if i have a 2nd battery does it have to be the same amp hr as the first one or can i get away with a smaller cheaper one.....

  8. Am going to fit a 5t winch to the defender in the spring (if we ever have one!).....i have been advised that i need a second battery with a split charging system....the battery i have on at the moment is a heavy duty Bosh...do i have to fit another one the same amp hr ( which will be effin expensive) or can i get away with a smaller cheaper less amp hour battery...i wont be using the winch everyday but now and again and not for long periods of time

    .........................

  9. very similar here, when it was mild a few days ago there was a lot of movement, then as soon as the temperature dropped..it all stopped, they are still there but feeding slowly and doing a lot of hanging about, i think this wont last long, and despite the temp they will go seriously on the feed again....
