  14. This might help: As the amount of bullet jump decreases, pressures may increase. For this reason work up loads as you would with increasing powder charges. Start with the bullet 0.020" off the rifling for typical varmint calibers and 0.050" off for hunting rifles. Load three to five rounds at the suggested starting point and then vary the length both up and down by 0.010" while carefully watching for pressure signs. After you've found a length that seems to be working it might be worthwhile to try a change of 0.005" on either side SF
  15. Hi BICOSDICOS and welcome. I have shoot more than my fair share of reds using a .243 and 100g bullets and always felt it was adequate for the job. A couple of years ago I added a .308 to my collection and have never looked back. I use 150g bullets which I find a good all-round weight for Roe, Fallow and Red. I experience less carcass damage with the .308, they go down faster. Everyone will have their favourites but the .308 is mine for stalking and target shooting. The .308 is renowned for its accuracy, easy to load for and is the choice of snipers world wide for medium range targets ( up to 800 yards) for good reason. Get one, you won’t regret it. SF
  16. Good advice on using turrets to dial in correction at long range. You will need to select a high end scope as this is where they come into their own. Lesser scopes will not return to zero after you have been up and down the scale a few times requiring constant re-zeroing. Regarding the first or second focal plain if your using turrets go for second focal plane. If you are thinking of ever using mildots or other graduated reticules’ go for the first focal plain. Otherwise the second focal plain scopes are only calibrated for one magnification, usually the highest for using mildots etc. What happens is the target gets bigger or smaller but the reticule does not meaning that the calibration will be out unless you use the correct magnification setting. SF
  17. If it just for stalking the .270 will do it all. If you think some time in the future you might want to try some target shooting either the 6.5 or .308 will give you an edge in the accuracy department and be suitable for all species of deer. SF
  18. The barrel length is more associated with velocity than accuracy. With larger cartridges that contain more powder if the barrel is to short all of the powder is not burnt before the bullet leaves the barrel. This means maximum velocity is not achieved. High velocity is an advantage at longer ranges as it reduces the effects of wind and drop on the bullet. For a .308 26" is considered optimum barrel length but this will vary according to the bullet type and weight you use. If the barrel is to long the bullet reaches maximum velocity and then for the remainder of its travel in the barrel it is slowing down. Heavy barrels (larger diameter) generally provide greater accuracy than standard barrels. This is because barrels flex as the bullet travels through them and the larger the barrel diameter the stiffer it is causing less flex. This is why most target/Long range shooters use heavy/varmint barrels. Heavy barrels add a considerable amount of weight to a rifle this also helps with reducing recoil but if you are a stalker this means more to carry hence why most sporting guns are fitted with standard barrels. Hope this helps. SF
  19. Guys Thanks for the advice. I am on my fourth coat and its starting to look good. SF
  20. Hi I have read through the many threads on this site regarding refinishing a stock but have yet to find the answer I am looking for. I have a Miroku stock that has been fully prepped and is ready for the final oil finish. I am using Trade Secret Raid Oil and applying small quantities by hand generating a lot of heat in the process. When finishing each coat should I buff with a lint free cloth or just let it dry as is? Any advice would be appreciated. SF
  21. Thanks, I had not seen one before and had not even heard of them. SF
