  1. SLRs were fab, reliable and accurate but too unweildy and difficult to manouvre in confined spaces. They were particularly awkward to use in urban combat situations due to their length.

The sa80 was brought in because it is FAR more user friendly in the same situations. It's bullpup design means you don't have to sacrifice barrel length for a shorter more manouverable weapon. It was bloomin un-reliable in the early days and jams were frequent and frustrating but all new technology has teething problems and the issues were soon ironed out.

Engagements tend to be won in theatre with firepower, not knock down power otherwise our troops would all be carrying Barretts! pound for pound a soldier can carry far more 5.56 rounds than 7.62, in close quarter situations 5.56 are just as effective and are actually quite handy out to 600mtrs if the shooter is up to it.

7.62 ADDS another tool to the box that's all. This is in no way anyone recognising that 5.56 isn't up to it... it really is up to it! The SA80s eventual replacement will probably still use 5.56 due to the significant additional ammo that can be carried over heavier hitting rounds.

and what about those of us who shoot lefty? :)

  2. Oh I agree with you. Aside from the AR-15's, one of my favorite guns to shoot is my Ishapore Lee Enfield, which is basically an Indian made No.4 chambered for 7.62 NATO instead of .303. But it gets expensive quick when 100 rounds of 7.62 NATO costs $70 and 500 rounds of .223 cost almost $200. .22 is a good alternative if you wanna save a little money.

hey doc, make us all jealous. how much are .22lr's going for across the pond these days?

  3. There's a little bit of me that thinks this thread cold have gone a very different way.

Imagine if the OP was telling us how he was controlling rats or rabbits damaging a nature reserve with the owners permission. He was there keeping a low profile, minding his own business when a number of armed policemen turn up and do a lot of frisking!

I would have phoned the police, but this thread could have been very different from the other side.......

nothing to hide, nothing to fear...

  4. I was walking the dogs tonight and Purdey was playing up on the lead so I was concentrating on her, Harlie(my eldest) was walking ahead with phred my jack russell, we were walking through a nature reserve at Stanford-le-hope, just past the lakes i fish. I looked up to see Harlie about 40 yards ahead of me, and about another 10yards further on saw a blackman come out of the bushes with a rifle in his hand, Im not sure if he saw us or not, but he walked ahead another 20 yards and fired at something, Im failry sure it was an air rifle but it was dusk, it was very quiet and I didnt see a mod.

Harlie was quite frightened by this camoed idiot walking out of the bushes, she came hurtling abck to where i was.; I decided that it was unsafe for him to be shooting there, I wasnt the only dog walker around either, so i called the police and reported him.

When I got in Lisa has a go at me for NOT having a go at him, i just thought in light or recent events it was best not to approach him but to let the authorities handle it.

They did take it seriously as they phoned back 5 mins later for an exact location.

Would you have approached him or rung it in?

It really depends on location, but in this case, I would have rung it in

there aint nobody that's allowed to have a gun on a nature reserve, so he aint meant to be there

  5. Surely that is why they have built their media centre.

I have my opinions on basc (pigeon day, laying cages & lead) but as an early member of the NGO I would like to know what they are doing right now with the £91K (or around that) they have in the bank at the end of the last financial year. NO shooting = NO game keepers.

contingency fund, incase the unthinkable happened :good:
