  1. Hi, I am planning on ordering a couple of Larsen traps for crows and magpies. There are 3 options, top entry, side entry or a combination trap with one of each. Just wondering if people have a preference/have noticed that one type is more effective than the other? Thanks
  2. I know most of you guys on this part of the forum are coastal fowlers but thought here would probably be the best place for advice! We have a pond with about 40/50 wild mallard on it every day, been feeding it for the last month or so and it usually works well for an evening flight. For some reason this year though they are using it as a day roost and none are coming in at dusk. We can't drive the pond as it is so open, so what is best? I was thinking of walking them off in the morning and then sitting tight, as they tend to try and come back in in ones and two's after being scared off when I feed it. Or of course getting there before daylight? But i'm not sure if they are coming in whilst its dark in one big group! I suppose i've probably answered my own question to a point, but thought some of you would have better knowledge of wild duck than I do!! Cheers
  3. Thanks kennet will give them a ring... Penelope, unfortunately radwinter wild game have said they aren't taking any deer at the moment! Or frozen woodpigeons!
  4. Does anyone know of any game dealers within roughly an hour or so from Cambridge? Struggling to find anywhere taking deer or frozen woodpigeons at the moment... Cheers
  5. I have heard that that shooting fallow bucks during the rut is not a good idea as they **** all over themselves and smell horrendous when it comes to butchering them. Is this true is it really that bad? And if so when do they start to smell, I know they rut around October time but am not sure how long the rut carries on for. Thanks

    Rifle cabinet

Hi, looking for a rifle cabinet that can fit 2-3 rifles with a scope, within an hour or so from the Cambridge area. thanks
  7. Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows of any one day deer stalking courses that are within an hour or so's drive from Cambridge? I was recently rejected for my application of a .243 for deer as I had no form of "certification", I was told by the FEO that a 1 day deer stalking course that provides certification at the end will suffice, however I am struggling to find any of these, thanks
  8. I have just sent off my fac application for .243 and .17hmr, and have not yet bought a cabinet to fit them because I dont know if I will be granted the weapons or not and dont want to waste money buying one if it wont be used. Is it ok to do this and wait before being granted the weapons until setting up security arrangements or do security arrangements have to be in place before the interview? Cheers
  9. Im filling out my application now and was thinking I might aswell put down .243 and just see what they say, is this a good idea? I have already put down .22 rimfire, .17hmr and .223 centerfire so thought it might look abit excessive putting down 4 rifles on a first application, especially when I only plan on getting 2. I've put down .22 and .17hmr because I am undecided with the 2 and have put down .223 for fox and muntjac. I would ideally like a .243 as fallow are numerous on land and I dont want to be buying another rifle in a couple of years time, but I feel that applying for 4 rifles at 18 would just look stupid
  10. Ok thanks, and yeah I did wonder whether I would be granted a larger caliber but I thought having a SGC for a while might help me on that...and yes I would possibly be interested in shooting fallow in the not too distant future however I guess it would be even harder to get a .243 than something smaller for just fox and muntjac. Also would I have had to have passed a DSC or something like that for fallow?
  11. Im 18 and have never held a FAC before just a SGC for about 4 years. I was hoping to apply for an FAC to get both a .17hmr for rabbits and .223 for muntjac and fox, however i'm abit confused would I apply for both of these seperately or in the same application? I have also heard that it can be hard to get granted a larger caliber like .223 without having had a smaller caliber such as a .17 or .22 for a few years, is this true?
  12. I have a semi auto 12 bore, Beretta a300 and was wondering if someone knows whether it would be possible to fit a non permanent silencer on it? I want to use it for lamping rabbits, noise is an issue and I don't have a .22 or .17hmr. I havent really heard of people using silenced shotguns other than hushpower .410s but don't see why it wouldn't be possible?
  13. Yeah it is, I attended last year and had a great day. Would love to go this year but it is on a monday!! So can't go because of college
  14. They might be late this year as the spring was so cold, at least there is less rain this year so chicks should do better
  15. Any one seen any wilds broods about yet? I have only seen ducks and moorhens with young, few pairs of grey partridges and hen pheasants are about but I havent seen any with chicks yet! Although the cover is very high now so probably just not seeing them
  16. Hi I have bought a box of 50gram 0's in 12 bore as these were what the guy at the gun shop recommended when I asked what cartridges I should use for a fox! Havent been out to try them out yet but does anyone have any experience with such heavy cartridges, what is the recoil like? thats another 20 grams more than what I usually use on pigeons etc. Just hoping I dont damage my gun...or my shoulder haha
  17. At the moment the only gun I have is a 20 bore, berreta silver pigeon and I am looking for something that would be more practical for pigeon shooting and general vermin control etc. However have no idea what semi auto to get as there are just so many different types!! It would mainly be used for pigeon decoying and squirrel shooting but I would also want it to be proofed for steel and be able to take heavy loads for foxes which I think most semi autos are... My budget is about £700 max, I have looked at hatsan escorts which seem like nice guns and they are cheap, however my mate had one and it jammed alot..browning maxus also seems like a nice gun, does anyone have any recommendations??? I dont want one that will jam on me with light pigeon loads Thankyou
  18. It's his farm not yours, he doesn't have to go to the trouble of building hides for you that is your job you're the pigeon shooter. Stop complaining.
  19. Right first of all I shoot on a farm in Essex and I know that Jack snipe are protected in england. Now we have a small boggy area and when i last stalked up to it looking for teal I flushed a good dozen birds that were either snipe or jack snipe but I don't know which so I didn't shoot. I dont know if this information is helpful but they flew up without making a noise, they didn't call atall...So does anyone know whether these would be jack snipe or common snipe, or how i could tell the difference between the two? Are jack snipe even present in this part of england? Cheers
  20. I really dont see why so many people get annoyed over the way yanks hunt, they have different traditions to us but they dont have "no respect"! If anything the many commercial driven shoots in the UK where 30,000 birds are released and they shoot 30 days a year have fair less respect. And the snobbery about how they shoot at unsporting birds is ridiculous, the end result is a bird dead to be eaten whether it was sporting or unsporting, its just personal preference. Anyone who goes rough shooting like me will have shot many cock pheasants that would be classed as "unsporting" by lots of people but the sport isn't always in the shot. I agree with leaving less sporting birds on a driven day but that is a completely different form of shooting. The one thing that does any me is the way they shout ROOSTERRR!
  21. She is a bloody good shot if thats her first time shooting! Much much better than me and i've been shooting for 3 years!
  22. Also nowadays most shoots have turned to buying in poults as apposed to relying on wild stock, meaning that alot less gamekeepers bother with larsen trapping corvids and keeping there number down as they dont really bother them!
  23. Build some sort of a permanent hide near one of these squirrel feeders you are talking about, or near any pheasant feeders if there are any. And build it about 25 yards away or wherever your gun is zeroed in for, it does not have to be good at all really as squirrels don't seem to spot people like pigeons, crows and magpies etc do. You don't even need a hide, a fallen tree or something that will hide your movements a bit and give you a gun rest is fine! Also in my experience you never have to wait very long for squirrels although by far the best time is early morning!
  24. Thanks for the comments, Brian the camera is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX70 its a digital camera nothing special I dont think I have never heard of this before? It didnt seem to make any difference but maybe in future I'll dispatch them away from the call bird if it may help!
