  1. Maybe you would like to like to take up the challenge then YDS. Of course the round will shoot out to 300 yards, but as it has been PROVED it is hard enough to get the shot on a A4 piece of paper let alone hit a rabbit.
  2. Demonwolf, It has nothing to do with being good. It is more about achieving the impossible 10 out of 11 times. Ask Zapp, Wookie or Pavman about shooting an HMR at 300 yards. Then come and tell us what they said.
  3. Buying them from E bay is OK, having them set on feet and claiming it was yards is where it all falls down.
  4. Is the same Ex member who challenged you to prove your marksmanship by hitting a coke can at 300 yards. I think the conditions were perfect at least 3 times yet you were either washing your hair or going to see Take That or Soft Cell or some other such Boy Band. Maybe you are just a little sour that the person who you introduced to shooting is now getting some proper instruction from someone who can actually shoot and can tell her where she is going wrong. Rather than telling her to fit tight chokes and use 28 gram loads. I know that your 284 yard claim is a lie as I know how far 300 yards is, I frequently shoot at 300 yards and that is classed as short range. The school kids on here maybe impressed by your ficticious claims but frankly anyone who has shot an HMR to 300 yards knows full well that you have never hit a rabbit at that distance, let alone 10 out of 11 Keep kidding yourself, someone may believe you. But don't hold your breath
  5. Maybe you could copy and paste his private conversations to a moderator, then he really would have a reason for leaving.
  6. You need to teach the reverse retrieve, starting with getting her to hold the dummy. releasing it only when you give the correct command. I have just gone through this with my young pup. I will try and type up how I got mine retrieving. It starts with training her to hold the dummy and using a clicker and treats. It is a long process and needs to be done in stages.
  7. Odds are minimal but not impossible, so what happens with the ones that don't get killed outright? Yes birds can get pricked and fly on, rabbits can get hit and still make their hole. But the true sportsman does everything he can to minimise that happening. Not taking long shots because most of the time he can.
  8. I shoot a 28 bore quite a lot and as has already been stated the only downfall to them is the price of the cartridges. I am looking into reloading for mine but it certainly is a sweet little gun and if you do your part it will certainly do it's.
  9. Al4x, don't get me wrong, I accept that animals are wounded every day of the week. I have never raised the safety issue as because you say a shot can be just as dangerous at 20 yards as it can at 1000 yards. The question I asked is what do the people who shoot at these long ranges do if they wing one? The answer is obvious that they leave it to die. With regards to a shotgun yes probably more birds are wounded with one however the range is short and the bird can be dispatched as quickly as possible. Especially if the shooter is responsible enough to have a dog with him.
  10. Really? I beg to differ, at a recent intercounties shoot at Bisley I would have said that 80% of the first shots were a V. You say that to produce an accurate shot you need all the wind data etc etc but where do you get that from when you are out in the field? How do you know about the wind at 800 yards? You do not have wind flags etc in every field you shoot do you? When I Target shoot I have wind charts and experience based on what the flags are doing, I already know what my elevation will be because I have shot at that range before. The firing points are set out at the correct distances. What is the accuracy of you rangefinder? Even if it is 1m in 1000m then you could still be 5m out at 500 and that could mean an injured animal. Not to mention the wind slightly gusting more or less just as you take the shot. I would also echo the earlier comments about proving yourself at Bisley, anytime you like.
  11. I would like to ask these long range shooters what they do when they don't hit exactly in the head. What happens if you "wing" a rabbit at those sort of ranges? Please don't say that you don't miss or you can hit a rabbit anywhere with a centrefire and it is dead. Do you then run the 600 odd yards to dispatch it humanely? Anyone who has ever shot out to those sort of distances and beyond will know the effect of the wind and a couple of yards out in your distance has such an impact on your elevation.
  12. Gordon System cases are excellent for reloading. I only load either blue diamond or black gold cases. My load is 24gr GM3 4mm card and 20mm fibre wad and 1oz of shot. You may struggle to get a decent crimp if the wad is 23mm long. A white Winchester WAA wad works with 1 1/8oz if you can get them. I will measure one and let you know.
  13. Well I don't reload, ammunition is issued at TR competitions and you use what they give you.
  14. What do you class as serious accuracy? I have shot a 3" 8 shot group at 500 yards and one a little over 10" with 15 rounds at 1000 yards. This is all with standard issued ammunition. RG L42A3 155gr to be precise. I doubt they had the neck anealed
  15. I wasn't aware it is up to the police to tell you what quarry you can shoot where. Surely if they have passed the land for .17HMR and you have fox on your .17 on your conditions then they cannot stop you. Besides you don't have to tell them what you shoot and where do you?
