i too use 75 v-max or 70 berger to devastating effect on foxes use either viht or varget powder in my 243 & 243ai can get vel up to 3900fps but faster doesn't always mean more accurrate ,i can give you a few recipes but would strongly reccommend working up to a load and seating bullets at different dephts until you get the right combo ,i takes a bit of time but worth the effort & expense in the long run :look:

i have this problem before ,sounds like tawny owl pluck a couple of birds & if it is tawny there will be some bruising on the back & possible breakage where the owl has grabbed the bird.tawny owls normally eat from the back part of the head to get to the brain first ,all i done was to hang empty plastic bags (grower pellets) around the outside of the pen near to were a likely looking perch is also bought a cheap radio & wrapped it in a plastic bag & switched on at dusk just before final check which station is a personal choice but broadland seemed to work for me

just had a look through my book shot 95 foxes since jan, best night was sat 24 july got 10 started at 10.30 & finished at 3.00

got 2 pairs on my permission have seen them take poults ,they tend to sit up a tree & wait for the pheasants to come into the open before taken them, seem to fly straight over the pond where the ducks are & head straight to the pheasant ride !

deadeyed duck (DON) this is my personal preference after spending sh*tloads of money on different guns & calibres ,yes i have got lots of land to shoot over in excess of 8000 acres including several livestock farms with marshes & grazing paddocks in them which i have sole shooting rights too, like i said this is my personal prefence i only need to take one rifle out if im going to shoot deer or fox or both as the case maybe cuts down the runnung costs also (bullets ),i cant remember the last time i shot a fox at less than 200yards & this rifle & calibre gives me the confidence to do this ,,yes i am a safe shot with an open cert (when it used to take you two years to get it )with over 12years firearm experience & handle guns & dispatch livestock daily.i personally find the 243 to my liking not saying that others agree ,so be it ,if that were the case we would all have the same calibre how boring would that be ps i have a foxpro caller sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt as soon as a safe shot presents itself i take it ,cant afford not too when farmers are relying on you to do a job ,

having shot both 223 & 22250 also a 222 , i would recommend a 22250 for longer ranges of 250 + the 222 is adequate for charlies up to this range but lacks stopping power after this ,the 223 is more economic to load than a 22250 ,i used to load 35 grain of varget behind a 55 nos were as a 223 is 20 odd grain so a plus point , if you are shooting factory in 22250 50 grain rems were good in mine ,i shoot a 243 AI & wouldnt consider anything else for charlies,also it has accounted for a few deer including red , the ground i shoot you rarely get a fox under 200yards & have taken foxes out to 450yards with my old 243so this is my prefered cal very versitile with the right bullet head IMO

in norfolk you cant get a 17 hmr for foxes ,but if you are out like i was feeding pheasants last year with only the 17 to hand are you going to let it go ,its all about being sensible

rem 223 like i said never had anything get up from a 87 v-max only head & neck shoot deer ,if the deer doesn't present these areas don't take the shot , but that is just me ,i am a butcher by trade & you wouldn't believe the amount of carcase damage chest shooting does but this is only my opinion & i know the capabilities of my rifles & more importantly my marksmanship just seems a waste to shoot a beast only to chuck half of it away .ps have also shot escaped cattle out to 150 yards with this round no problem ,but if you are going to chest shoot em yes a sp would be hard to beat imo

try a stoney point aol gauge with a modified case to get the correct length ,bullet comparaters are not that expensive about £18 & about £4 each for each bushing

made up a few various rounds today ,found that vit 160 behind 75 vmax worked best & varget behind a 70 berger both were clover leafing holeing @ 130 not bad considering a bit of a windy day, oal was 3238 now gonna play about with this to reduce size of groups

bit of a grey area ,you are right ,if you are going to keep the gun dont need to have it proofed but if you decide to sell it ,it really should be proofed ,but imo its a waste of money you can buy a gun of a gunsmith with no thread hand it straight back & get it threaded no proof required .just another way of getting at our cash imo

never had any problems with v-max 87 grn ,devastating on foxes can easily take fallow out to .

what twist has your rifle got ? used to have a 223 got on well with vit 133 & also h335 as well as varget shooting a 60 grain nosler i found the best to be varget only slightly thou ,mine was a rem 700 customised fully with a 1 in 8 twist

5 shot group fireforming lapua brass @ 130yards 70grain nosler 42grain varget

now finished loading a few rounds to try ,done 44,45,46 grain varget behind a 70 nosler & berger 43.5 ,44.5 varget behind a 75 v-max also done 51 grain vit behind 70 grain berger & nosler ,aol is 3238 .now raining so have to have a shot tomorrow ,in your opinion is 51 grain of vit the max you would use

i woud personally buy new ,you now exactly what you are getting & not something that you dont know nothing about .when or if you decide to get a new rifle make sure you shoot the barrel in properly.

yes using redding comp dies seating into lands to fire form so no headspace ,using lapua brass shooting a respectable group at moment only neck sizing got afew more rounds to go before i get my required quanity of fireformed cases , hence the questions dont want to leave it to the last minute ,excuse my ignorance m8 but very little knowledge of this calibre used to shooting a standard 243 & 6.5 x55 ,thank you for your info

in 2009 shot 129 foxes & over 1000 rabbits, this year so far i have shot 29 since the start of jan ,had 2 last night only see 4 bit of a wet & windy night
