  1. Alexm is very likely to be right, it's not POSTing (power on self test).

If you've anything on there you value then take him up on his offer of data transfer / recovery first - terms and conditions exclude personal data on the machine and very often people send in laptops and try complaining that they come back at day one state.

  2. I for one think this new "clarity" regarding public expenditure is a good thing.

For years it's all been hidden, the media have picked up on it now and like a terrier on a rat they won't let go until it's well and truly dead.

Boils my **** when these people are given a salary they class as "unreasonable" then they are able to claim just about everything they need to spend from that wage from taxpayers cash.

In my line of work, if you think the salary you are given is "unreasonable" you either ask for a raise or you get another job, seems in this game you simply conspire behind closed doors to make that wage go further by hiding any expenditure you might have, be that personal or otherwise, such that the wage you do get you don't need to expend on "life".

I'd be so happy if my salary simply paid for anything I wanted outside of food, housing, clothing, family expenses (including paying spouse/children a wage for doing nothing) and everything else including I note a kitchen sink

  3. That all depends on what is wrong with it.

Similarly with cars, computers seem to end up being very hard to get replaced if they are faulty. I'd know, I worked in a very well known firm who sell a lot of really **** computers, in all the time I was employed there I probably authorised 2 replacements out of 5000 complaints.

The situation is incredibly complicated, see the likelihood is that the goods you have been sold are not faulty, however the software you have chosen to accept the licensing agreement for, has had some problems.

Purely theoretically, if you could prove that Windows Vista was defective, then you'd be entitled to a refund (for windows, not the laptop). It really all depends on what is actually wrong, unless you are an expert you stand very little chance of just getting a replacement.

Striking up the car analogy again (and I ain't saying this is what's happened, just an example) :-

If you drive the car out of the showroom and don't look right before turning left, and someone hits you, you wouldn't go back to the garage and demand a replacement car.

Similarly if you buy a car you are expected to have it serviced, as well as perform basic checks yourself. If you fail to check tyre pressures and you have a blow out, you wouldn't try and claim a new car from the company who sold it to you.

With computers it is very similar, it's a purchase which you are expected to look after, tend to and keep a check on (virus / malware / etc) - if you don't then like the car analogy you can't really expect them to provide you a replacement, if it's not actually defective.

The situation is so complicated, it is something I have been to court over previously and take it from me it's not worth your time. If you'd like a professional opinion on the laptop I'd be happy to take a look at it for you and compile a report.

  4. You need to do a system restore to a date before it failed.

Try that and see what happens. If that does not work then

    think about takeing it back.

    Cheers taz.

And he will do that how, considering it's not starting up

It is possible but you'll need a Windows CD to boot from, what to do next depends on what version of windows it is....

  5. What about if you have a public footpath in the middle of your shoot?

Question was about highways, footpaths are a different shooting match - if you'll pardon the pun.

So long as you take suitable care you can shoot on and over footpaths, something you couldn't do with a road. I don't know many shooters who don't have public footpaths / rights of way on their land, just something you get used to.

  6. I've shot close to roads before and not had an issue, one particular place we are careful to make sure it's 50feet or more. That's not a lot of distance and there is a footpath behind the hedge, and a road beside it. Sometimes you can hear people "look, here comes another one BLAM yay he got that one" etc.

    Bit of added pressure

Apart from blatant "not on the actual permission land" cases, this legislation has not yet been tested (source: BASC) so it's common sense really. Can't be a massive issue if it's never come up before.

  7. Hrm, just did some numbers sam and it's all assumption stuff, I was surprised to find the energy as low as that @ only 40yds. Granted I have been working on quoted figures on shells I use (couldn't find test data) and I make it about 3.5lb/ft @ 40yds.

I would have expected more than that, but then thinking about it once the pattern density really spreads out there's nothing in the way of mass to keep the momentum..

  8. I've found that the larger corvids are much harder to actually hit than pigeon. They are certainly tougher than pigeon.

They fly deceptively and I think the tendency is to over lead them (I know this was stationary sam..)

I've killed them out to longer ranges than I'll put on a post here with No6 and no6.5's in 30 and 32g No5 certainly does the job as well but for inside 40yds you shouldn't need to go that big.
