  1. im pretty sure they are alabaster, the guy im selling for bought them direct from a spanish quarry. they've been used to make a backlit shower cubicle. thanks for your help il send some picks when get them.

Nice. Are they a true white or have a bit of colour to them? Ive seen a few stones used for what you mention, and everyone of them has looked the dogs doo dahs. Im at the stone show in excel next wednesday so if you PM a bit more info and pics I can ask around and try to get an idea of what they might be worth, I wouldnt hold my breath though and suspect that if you could get £30 for the lot you would be doing very well (assuming youve got around half a dozen or so). I am more than prepared to eat my words though, especially if you have enough to do somthing with, rather than just the odd couple left.

If he can get a name of the quarry and the specific stone name then that will help.

  2. right im hoping someone might be able to help but its a long-shot. i have been asked to sell some alabaster bricks on ebay for a friend, they are pretty big, around 40x15x5cm i would guess and weight about 20lb. the problem is i dont have a clue what they're worth and hours of googling hasn't got me anywhere.

So does anybody know anything about stone? :hmm:

    cheers

I know a little bit, but not really up on Alabaster (better on paving products really) as its mainly used in sculpture work. Are you sure thats what they are? If it scratches easily (and I do mean very easily) then it might be. If they are for external use they are more likely to be Purbeck, Bath or possibly a marble, but without seeing them its hard to say. Try http://www.findstone.com/ and have a look through some of the libary pics and see what you think. TBH I doubt they are worth much and if true Alabaster then would be of more interest to a sculpter than for construction. You are welcome to PM me some photos and I will try and ID it but again without holding the sample it wont be easy.

  3. Resin Bonded (basically resin laid as a thin coat then dry aggregate sprinkled on top) systems are more for pedestrian use really, they are not great for vehicle traffic as they can show wear. The Resin Bound (basically dry aggregate and resin mixed together then trowlled down at about 20mm thick) system is ideal for drives, but due to the extra resin and aggregate will obviously work out more expensive.

Aggregate rolled into tarmac or concrete just looks ****. Nuff said.

  4. In a way at least you in theory defaulted so there is a slight reason. Its definitely Santander though I think being a holes sounds like your situation is similar. I half think its because they have bought these other banks and are trying to wind up as many loose ends / less profitable accounts as possible in as brutal a way as possible. I take it you have the nice address in Milton Keynes to write to to try and sort it out?

No, apparently I have to deal with 'Archive' who use a PO box in London from memory. The annoying thing is that Santander seem to be useing different T&Cs from A&L. I agree with you though that most banks seem to be really tightening down on every little thing, even when completely unreasonable. Barclays recently pooed from a great height on a friends business with regards to withdrawl of an overdraft despite them having security in the shape of a very nice house with equity way over the OD amount, and never mis-using the account or going over in the 10 years he has had it. It seems that you just cant win with banks.

  5. Im in a similar situation with Alliance and Leicester. I had a small loan with them, last payment to finish it made about 2 years ago, on two occasions a payment was made about a week late (once because some scrote had emptied my account), on checking my credit report it says that I am in default of the loan, despite it being paid in full and never having been told I was in default. It seems that Santander who now own them regard a late payment as a default (different to Alliance and Leicester policy) and refuse to do anything about it. Its causing me real greif now and I am thinking of going to my soliciter to see what can be done, but im not sure that he can do anything about it. Why are these things always so difficult to sort out?

  6. Ask your bank to do a SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank funcds transfer) payment, you need the SWIFT address of

the receiving bank and the account number and name of the recipient account holder & their name of course.

All very straight forward, I deal with $Trillions a day with my system, all very very secure, traceable and legal.

The cost maybe £25 to £30 depending on who you bank with, plus a Cross Currency charge as you send £ and they recieve $

and there will be a cut made by the banks on the exchange rate.

    Regards

Mike, (this is what I specialise in , big banks software and foreign payments)

Thats the way to do it. Lloyds TSB call it an international money mover form, and you have to do it at the counter.

  7. I salted a few blow lug a while back when I was camping and fishing on the beachs for a week with no access to a freezer. I just dropped them individually on a bed of salt at the bottom of a tupperware box then added more salt on top and then another layer of worm and so on and left them with the lid on in the fridge for a few days. OK they werent as good as fresh but I still caught a few fish on them.

  8. Cracking fish that mate! My piking season has been dire so far, just cant seem to get the bank time.

Cracking fish there fella :good: if your into pike fishing. The lake near me has had some woppers caught a 46lb pike before christmas came out and it holds carp to over 40lb but its all hush hush check it out on the web ( kenfig pool ) near Porthcawl :good:

You are aware that a 46lb pike would make it into the top 5 UK pike ever arnt you? There was a 46 caught in 2007 that was from an undisclosed water, but from what I hear it wasnt in wales. The trout ressies are probably the best bet for a 40 now, but theyve not been great recently either.

  9. Not sure its age related, I remember hunting round the house for an hour for a pair of sunglasses last summer getting more and more annoyed and started scratching my head, yup youve guessed it they were on my bonce all along

It runs in our family though, I remember my dad making the gravy with Kenco rather than Bisto. He still gets a hard time for it!

  10. http://www.diamondhouse.be/

Mungler I took the wife to Antwerp , there is a large Jewish community selling diamonds , bought her a one carat diamond ring , cost me $3.500 dollars from "The diamond house" I think I got a really good deal , I don't think buying from the high street is value for money , if your Mrs knows her diamonds then a poor cut an poor quality wont cut the mustard , but if she wants the best and I mean the very best then a trip across into belgium could be on the cards , my Mrs has had the ring for five years now and she still loves the way it sparkles , she is very happy we went for quality , :)

Or Amsterdam, that has a big diamond business plus there are various other distractions for a gentleman of taste.

  11. Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who replied to my earlier thread concerning the doctors letter :)

The original plan was to get him his SGC and then in a few years time apply for a FAC so he could come with me to another club I'm also member of, obviously things being what they are at the moment that's not going to happen any time soon.

However, following a posting on the other thread about him trying air rifles/pistols I took him along to the club on Friday evening and we had a chat with the chairman. Having explained everything that's gone on (he wasn't at all surprised) he said that as long as he completed the mandatory safety training and probationary period he could become a full member of the club same as anyone else using his own air weapons or the clubs 22 rimfire or 357 underlever rifles. The fact that he wouldn't be able to apply for his FAC any time soon wasn't an issue and he would be able to shoot there as long as he remained a member :)

Once again my thinks to all who offered advice :)

    Good Stuff!

  12. OK just for a change, Whats everyones most memorable fish?

For me it was my first cat from the ebro. We were staying on a boat on the river and had just got to where we would be fishing for the week. It was just getting dark and out of the darkness appeared a canoe containing a german guide we had met earlier who was with a group on the far bank (about 500m at that point). We got talking and he said, in broken english, that it was worth chucking a rod out for an hour or two off the house boat. So we tackled up as he was paddling off. Once he had disappeared we heardhis voice comeing from the darkness 'If you wait, they will come' . 15 minutes later my rod just ripped off and as I struck I could feel the power straight away, it was unlike anything I had experianced before. So the boats moving with it as im playing the fish and every now and then you could catch a glimpse of the dead trees poking up from the water, it was pretty spooky! after 5 minutes or so we got our first look at it when its head popped up next to the boat, cue mad panic from the boys who were supposed to be gloving it for me   . I supose me shoting 'Glove it Mart, just glove it for god sake' didnt help. We then realised that lifting an 80lb cat 2 foot up the boat with one hand wasnt easy. Picture one bloke holding the fish, another holding him and me holding the holder while offering constructive critiscism on how they should be doing it  Anyway, just the whole memory stays with me and sums up what its all about, making you feel 5 again.

  13. I'm with MM 100%, she is superb :good:

Do you know, I think I probably would. its her eyes. The less said about Mr Gervais the better. He, along with Micheal Macintyre, is definatly on my 'punch on sight' list.

  14. Estimated 135lb cat from the ebro on half a dozen donkey choker haibut pellets. Estimated because the two blokes I was with hooked up with 100lb cats as I was landing mine, while I helped land one, my second rod went off! between the 3 of us we couldnt keep 2 rods each in the water, just catching too many fish all around the 100lb mark. Between that, the excellent meal and a few bevs that night I slept like a log! The rest of the days were not as good as that, with probably only 1 fish over 100 out each day and maybe only 3 fish each per day.

  15. Hiya,

Not done any Piking for years but when I did it was almost always in heavily weeded areas so I used 16lb Berkly big game. However when braid came on the scene I moved on to that in 25lb bs. If I was to go back to it my line of choice now would be Power Pro braid in 28lb as it cuts through weed like a hot knife through butter :)

If memory serves from WSF your a Skate man arnt you Davy? Did a pretty epic rebuild on the boat as well I think?

If so, fair play on both counts!

  16. Whiplash is a nightmare for windknots! It was the first braid I ever used, and having learned to cast well enough to avoid the knots, I reckon I could cope with anything! On a fixed spool reel I did find it paid to slightly underfill with Whiplash, but was so pleased when I discovered Powerpro, and such problems more or less vanished.

Its great on the jigging rods where your just droping over the side of the boat with a light jig for Zander, but as you say for casting its a bit too thin IMHO. Everyone rates Power Pro but ive yet to try it. Think a change is in order for summer.

With Mono I always used to use Berkley Big Game in 15lb, but it is quite thick and I reckon it actually breaks at about 18-20lb. The only dislike I had with it is it seemed to have more memory than most. Sensor is pretty good as well, but once youve youve used braid for Pike, you wont go back to mono! For most piking I reckon its pretty much unbeatable in performance.
