  1. I've been waiting to post this topic for a little while now, but wanted to wait until I had the whole photostory. I've posted it all over the place so apologies if you've seen it already In February of this year I was contaced by Steve, who'd bought a copy of my book, 'Trap Making, Step by Step'. Out of the blue I got an email with these pics attached; clearly Steve had been very busy. Now as you might imagine I was really interested to see where this went. All the designs are tested but this was an opportunity to follow a truely independant field trial of the drop boxes. Before long the boxes were prepped and ready for installation. By mid Feb the boxes had been dug in but remained locked while the rabbits got used to them. Interestingly these have been installed with the tunnels running long the outside of a rabbit fence, not through as they often are. For reasons of access the traps were then left unset until mid March. On the first night of operation they caught 6 rabbits in one trap and 2 in another. Steve then closed them again and baited the area with carrot. By the 28th of March they'd had another 38, though obviously not having it active all the time.
  2. Packed and ready to go out tomorrow. Go and buy yourself some 4mm rod from B&Q to hang them on.
  3. Mungler - have a look here - there lots of information including a 'how it works' page. These see-saw traps will hold rats and squirrels easily without damage for over 24 hours and any trap must be checked within that timeframe anyway.
  4. CC - you can probably get a good idea how they work from here, although there's more detail in the book. http://www.fourteenacre.pwp.blueyonder.co..../Pigeontrap.htm Cheers John
  5. I love the door catch idea, that's exactly the sort of thing that I hoped would happen. The book is intended to give you plans that work in their own right and the confidence to develop the idea. Way to go Stealth Stalker.
  6. If you want pure beeswax rather than polish I can get hold of some. My dad is a beekeeper and he sells blocks. A beekeeper local to you will also probably be able to help
  7. Yes Thumpersniper it does have those in it :look: Funnily enough that was the first trap I ever made and probably what started me off. This is it. I found that the traditional design had a few limitations as you couldn't easily see or extract what you'd caught, once you'd caught it. In the old days they just dropped a pinch of cymag in and job done. The modified design in the book resolves that as you can see. More details on the website 'seesaw' pages. http://www.fourteenacre.pwp.blueyonder.co....rovedSeesaw.htm Cheers John
  8. I've always used immersion in meths to good effect. Might try BORAX though next time
  9. There's a post just a few topics down for a book on trap making. That's got a Larsen plan in it. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...showtopic=75049 the site is on this link http://www.fourteenacre.pwp.blueyonder.co....boutTheBook.htm [And it's probably only right and proper that I declare upfront that I am the author of this book ]
  10. I cannot shoot a Beretta O/U - I simply can't get them to fit and am forever getting smacked in the face. So my O/U is a Browning. However I shoot best with my semi-auto which is a Beretta AL390, so figure that out. I think it's because there are the shims to adjust the stock so precisely that i've just managed to get it right.
  11. All virtually new but camo taped up A flapper £35 http://www.pigeon-##############/proddetai...geonFlapperMK1V Remote control on/of £30 Speed controller £15 Plus any postage costs if you can't collect Located just south of Birmingham. Cheers, John
  12. 'Cause it's what I have most success with.
  13. I agree. To me this shows just how important BASC and CA now are to the continuation of shooting sports. Lets make sure we keep giving them the public and private support that they need, and the funds to represent us.
  14. A bit of further info - the Countryside Alliance obtained some verbal clarification from DEFRA yesterday. Unfortunatley it's in a PDF so I can't cut and paste anything CA Link In essence: Defra are 'happy for people to use the general license widely' And have to 'demonstrate that they have considered alternative methods', not necessarily used them.
  15. Back roost shooting in again last night - same wood as a week ago near Solihull. This time 7 birds 6 OSR 1 berries Exactly the opposite way round to a week ago. JB
  16. Another midlands report: Roost shooting last Saturday near Hockley Heath Of the eight I shot - 7 were holly berries and maize - 1 OSR JB
  17. Thanks YP, I'll have a look at those. I don't mind eating pigeon but the family aren't very game  Hopefully with winter on the weay I can hide it in the stew 2B
  18. Hi everyone I've only just started to get pigeon in any sort of quantity and I'm trying to find a game dealer for the surplus. I've had a look in the yellow pages but can't find any likely candidates locally. Is there any trick I'm missing here ? Or any alternate lists you use? I'm looking for one within about 20 miles of Warwick. The second question is about freezing the birds - do I empty the crop first or just wack them in the freezer as they come. Thanks John
