  1. well we went back up the farm at 1pm for a drive around ,spent 2 hours watching and driving around looking for pigeons ,only seen 6 odd ones flitting around ,we were just talking of going home and we spotted a few over a cut rape field ,so we set up the magnet and deeks ,then sat for another hour ,nothing to talk about ,then moved along the hedge about 500m where they were flying in and out of a wood ,but had a few shots but still no good ,we then seen a few land at the end of the field another 500m away ,so we moved again ,by this time we were sweating buckets and very tired walking up and down hills ,then this was about 6pm and we just put out 12 deeks ,and we started to dropped a few ,we only had 20 birds in 2 hours but lost 4 in cover crop ,but we must of seen 100+ birds but they were all in different places in the field ,they had us hopping lol ,good to see them back ,farmer now rolling the stubble ,so hope to see some black's ,

  2. my old man always cracked the joke he was going to get a tattoo of a W on each cheek of his *** so when he bends over it spells WOW ,so i said to him ,iam going to get a tattoo with an L on each cheek of my *** ,he said what will that spell LOL

  3. remember the first time i took my bro out shooting ,he shot his first pigeon and it was still ticking,so i told him to hold the body in one hand and hold the head in between your first finger and second finger and pull and twist ,you should feel a crack and its goodbye , he did this and we looked at the pigeon and all was left was a red stump coming out of were his head was ,he looked at me in shock and said "wheres its head" i the said "open your hand" its head was still in his hand and he didn't know lol should of seen him he screamed and jumped lol i was p++++ing my self lol i said not so hard next time there not hand grenades, i find the best way is like cosd has said ,just pick them up from the head and a quick swing in a circle there body weight then dose the work,if you don't like this way then try a lead filled priest ,but watch your thumbs lol

  4. No offence , but if you did not kill one bird cleanly perhaps you need some practice/lessons on clays first, of course there will always be the odd bird that is not dead but not everyone.

The easiest way to despatch a wounded pigeon is hold it in you left hand over its back pining the wings to the body , then simply twist the head round with your thumb and first finger of your right hand (other way round if your left handed )1 turn and it will be dead.

ive been shooting for 30 years i still have birds flapping and doing the backward roll lol
  5. If I was asked a few months ago I would have said Winchester GB 30 gram 6.5 for pigeon , but I have been using Hull superfast 29gram 6 and find them devastating on the pigeon out to a very good range and the bonus is they are very cheap compared to the winchester.

thanks for this post ,my bro in law has just go a slab for £35 and hes got chance of loads more, but there 7s ,will give the a go and see ,might be ok for deeks ?
  6. what ever you get just make sure it fits you or you wont drop much ,depends on what you want to spend ,ive shot silver pigeons brownings ect ect ,but if its just for rough/pigeon shooting /field gun i just stuck with a Baikal,as it don't matter if it gets marked, and there built to last like a russan T43 tank lol,,i my self have always shot with a double trigger non ejector ,never really got on with single select ,found it to fiddly and with a non ejector your not having to pick up empty's,but it can be handy when hide shooting when you have loads of action ,with my Baikal i have the option to turn off the ejectors ,just remember shotguns all do the same thing even if you pay £10 for one from the auctions or pay £1000s for a purdey ,they are steel tubes which shoot out lead shot ,just make sure it fits ,like the other chaps have said try as many as you can ,ive also stuck with fixed chokes like imp cylinder --1/2 cylinder for deeks or 1/2--3/4 choke for field ,but if you get multi chokes you then have the option to swap them around to suit your day out shooting ,

    happy gun hunting ;-)

  7. go to your local farmers store like countrywide and ask to put up a card on there notice board and also ask if you can leave some cards at the trade counter so if they do a sale to a farmer or land owner they could give out a card ,you should be a member of the BASC as they are there to help with legal matters ;-) when i first started shooting i typed out a letter saying a bit about myself and iam offering free vermin control and then photo copied it 20 time ,then got the yellow pages and found 20 addresses and sent it to 20 local farmers ,i got 2 out of it ,

  8. all different, no correct answer. Other dogs and competition is one, walking out with it another, lowering it gently in from a small boat, chucking dummies in the shallows getting progresively deeper till it steps off and swims- heck even getting in swimming yourself

come on the kent ,as you seem to be the only one right on PW and everyone else is wrong ,why don't you tell us how you do things and put us all to shame, far play you are ether full of it or you don't even own u gun or your just a keyboard warrior /troll ,you must of been well spoiled as a child ,you seem to have lots of toys to throw out of your pram LOL go on tell me your ex regiment and you used to test guns for the army ,we had one like you in are club and he was soon told were to go lol
  9. marblex is what it is called or there is hollow board ,i use to fit it ,and to be honest if you ent going to get a vent then don't use it ,what happens is you fit double glazing and then insulate your house it then becomes a fish tank , MOLD CITY ,marblex is ok in a well vented room ,you will get water running down the wall 10x more than you have now ,you need 300mm of insulation in the roof and a vent ,then flatten off old artex with a scraper then 2 coats of PVA glue ,then 2 coats of mult finish plaster ,then 2 coats of waterproof bathroom paint with a gloss finish ,have the vent come on with the light in the bathroom and on a timer ,if you cant get to the roof on the bathroom side then put a universal tile vent on the other side of the roof apex and link upto the vent with a long flexi pipe like you have for a tumble dryer, there is no other way ,you will waste a lot of time and money ,ive done mine and haven't had any mold for 4 years ,take it from a pro 30+ years in the trade ;-)

  10. Yes i fess up i do most of my testing as range work, paper is sooo much better for telling you whats happening than just having a crack live quarry. I am a member of precisely Nil target clubs and shoot at no official ranges and havent for a few years. It aint exactly difficult for me to test something as i have over 1000yds of safe ground from the front or back of my house and i fully understand how hard it is for some to only have 100yds club ranges to shoot on as i have been in that situation. Even when i shot at Diggle regulary you couldn't always get access to the range you wanted due to weekend comps and needed to have the appropriate number with RCO to shoot midweek etc

DSC lowland 100yds zero test has very little to do with this thread as it has nothing to do with cost of loading your own ammo or load development

yes you are right there kent ,but if this reply is being in reply to my comment ,the reason i commented about the 100m test and not cleaning my barrel is to show you that you can see on the test target how the group is tightening up as the rifling is fouling and i thought it might help this member a lot of time and money ,as when i first started to reload i thought i was doing something wrong ,like knocking the scope or getting the loads wrong ,months of time and lost cash ,then the chap that owns the ex military range who has shot a **** loads of years and many comps and has benchrest shooters in his club then said " the reason you have to put 20/30/40 odd rounds down range and adjust your scope is you take it home and clean it " i then said ive always have cleaned my guns from when i did my SKILL AT ARMS & MARKSMANSHIP ,he said try it ,your ok on modern nitro powders ,and believe me m8 dient want to not clean it but on my mothers ash's it worked 99% of are club members now use this ,like i say just trying to help a fellow shooter ;-)
  11. my howa and a few friends that had them had trouble with this ,its not your bolt/or extractor ,it because they have tight chambers ,ammo like wolf /steel cases gets stuck ,your best bet is if when you close the bolt and theres a bit of resistance don't close it all the way and open the bolt , don't then use that make of ammo ,the only time i didn't have trouble is when i started home loading and full length sizing the cases ,iam not slagging off howa rifles as i think there great ,only reason i got rid of mine was money was tight a few years ago
