  1. Jaydt10 I'm sorry but on this case I have to agree with birdsallpl, I can shoot as many clays as necessary. I don't shoot competitions any more but I'm still classified on cpsa as a double a shot. I just struggle with live quarry, I can hold my own on any clay ground, whether it skeet, sporting, down the line and so on. I think you have hit the nail on the head with reading the targets though and I think that's my problem, I can't seem to judge how far out a crow is or pigeon etc. I know at a clay ground all targets are hittable and therefore within range, as you get to repeat them etc it's easier to learn lead and the sight pictures. My problem is when I miss quarry I don't know where I'm missing and as I can't repeat the shot I can't work it out on my own, hence asking for help with so,embody pointing me in the right direction in the hide. Once I start connecting with more then I'm sure I will learn the sight pictures at relevant distances and know what I'm capable of hitting etc. Thanks for all the comments though. Regards jamie
  2. Great shooting and video mate. Stevo with your hide set up with a roof on it how do you shoot, are you sitting or standing?i can never understand how people shoot with a roof without it being impassively in the way, May thanks. Jamie
  3. Thanks for all the advice, reading through that makes me wonder if all my clay experience is almost having a negative affect on it. Judging distances is possibly what it is as the main sight pictures I have are f clays which are obviously a completely different size to crows,I will try to lessen my lead on the crows and see how that goes then. I got a few pigeons to decoy nicely the other day on the peas but there really wasn't much action in the air so it was hard to say. I also left my battery for the magnet at home which was annoying and didn't help matters. I've recently changed my chokes down to 1/2 and 1/4 now which also has helped on the close in pigeons over the decoys. On my last outing I hit 3 pigeons for 5 shots, they all decoyed nicely, but missed 3 crows with four shots. It was a quiet afternoon and I was only out for a couple of hours and although a small bag it was better to be out than at work so I can't complain, it would just be nice to start hitting more when they are about. Anyway thanks again and if there's anybody that can join me in the East Sussex area that would be great
  4. Hi guys, I've been shooting quite a while and im consistently hitting 80% or above on sporting clays and skeet but I am really struggling with decoying. I've only been out a handful of times on the pigeons but have a large amount of land to shoot over (growing peas, wheat, beans and oats, also a few hundred acres of pasture). I'm beginning to get so frustrated with it at the moment, I know practice makes perfect but I feel like I have no idea with where or why I'm missing right now so..... Is there any experienced shooters in the East Sussex/south kent area that would be willing to accompany me and help point me in the right direction please? On the first couple of outings I think I was trying to shoot them too far out and now I've let them come into the decoys I've been hitting more. But the other thing that has completely thrown me and really knocked my confidence are the crows, I can't hit them for love nor money and the farm I shoot seems to have loads of them Any help would be great fully received Jamie
  5. I popped up and did the fifty birds on Saturday, it is a lot better than it was a couple of years ago when I used to shoot there. The compact isn't yet up and running but the traps are being delivered for it in a couple of weeks time and then I think it will be open for practice too. There's still lots of improvements they plan to make at this ground which it really did need, but it is so much better already! They have gone into partnership with another gentleman win one of the skeet layouts who now is run as kx yes meet where I think they even do the American skeet with the eigth stand. Also they teamed up with the owner of greenfields (Canterbury) to do a 70bird sporting competition which looks as though it will now be a fairly regular thing. The next one being the 17th of November. Anybody that hasn't been there recently it's well worth a go as there isn't much else local :( Jamie
  6. Well done mate. As a newbie to this myself I haven't yet managed to get a double but have only been out twice so fingers crossed for next time keep up the good work
  7. Thanks jdog, I hope you're right. The ghost, I think you may well be right and I will give this a try on my next outing. In answer to your post fenboy then I used to shoot a lot of clays on cpsa I'm an aa shot, although stopped clays for a couple of years and seriously reduced my percentage of hits as only just starting back up so am no where near that standard now, but my point being that I sort of understand the lead from clays and felt like I was pulling through too fast and for my last three pigeon slowed down a bit and dropped three for three shots with only about a birds length of lead at 30ish yards. Falconfn, where abouts are you in East Sussex? And thanks that does make me feel better at least im not the only one, although I do hope it improves! Either way it was nice to spend the day out in countryside and I'm definitely learning more each time, like remember to charge the magnet as it doesn't spin with a flat battery and don't leave m seat at home as its not comfortable standing for five hours without it lol, yes it was all a bit rushed this morning when I was getting my gear together I will admit to being maybe a little bit too excited haha
  8. I think most of us would be absolutely chuffed with such a bag, so good on ya and I reckon you're hide position was a good call. Keep up the good work.
  9. As some of you may be aware I recently decided to take up pigeon decoying. Today was my second attempt as I finally got a day off work, so got to my permission at about 8.30 and watched the fields for a couple of hours. There really wasn't much happening but I managed to distinguish a weak flight line across a field of harvested wheat that was waiting to be bailed. I had my hide up, a dozen decoys,a floater and two flocked crows out by half ten and was ready for it all to begin, or so I thought. The first bird decoyed perfectly, straight in to my pattern and I missed it with both barrels! Not a good start to the day and unfortunately there was more of this to come, I shot absolutely terribly! I don't know why but I seem to do fine on the clays and really struggle on the real McCoy, I constantly over lead them and can't figure out why but all I know is its ridiculously frustrating. I'm not sure whether I'm over thinking things or something but I do okay on the quick birds that I just react too yet the sitters that are all tucked up and floating in I seem to miss. Anyway I stayed till 3 before the heavens opened and I packed up, I picked up 7 woodies and a crow so all in all it was a lot less than I hoped for as I should have been into the 20s with all my silly misses, but it sure as hell beats a day at work so I can't complain and will just stick at it. Hoping for some better luck next weekend if the mrs lets me out to play. Hope others are having more luck than myself? If anybody wants to join me next weekend to show me where I'm going wrong your more than welcome too! Jamie
  10. Well done mate, good to see you're getting some good shooting in and it definitely beats a day at work!
  11. Good luck mate hope you get a decent bag and the weather isn't too bad for you, it's pretty grim down here at the moment!
  12. Thanks for all the welcomes, mongrel that sounds great, BSA air gunner I've messages you back and East Sussex lad that sounds great I'm only 20 minutes from you in bexhill so a duck flight sounds brilliant. All the best. Jamie.
  13. I've been reading through this forum for a little while now and thought it about time I introduced myself. I'm jamie and have shot lots of clays in the past, stopped shooting for a year or so and now have decided I want to get back into it but after woodies etc rather than just the clays. I've only been out on the decoys once before but have just picked up a 600acre farm so will hopefully start doing it lots more, any experienced decoyers in the East Sussex area fancy joining me to give me some pointers then I'd be great full. All the best, Jamie
