  1. Good little bag with the .410 ! I’ve got one, and they’re certainly not the easiest to shoot well consistently!

Not using them often doesn’t help, I’ve only used it once this year and shot 37.....would have been 80+ with the 12 bore, but if the birds are decoying well they do the job no problem once you get your eye in and satisfying too!

  2. Still on the last of the rape stubble where I am, even though they are pretty old now and most been topped. I reckon it might be down to the dry weather, there is nowhere near the amount of germination we usually get a couple of weeks after being cut!

Shot 77 yesterday afternoon on an old topped off rape stubble with some germination, strong flightline and would have shot more had a strong wind not been in my face I think. Quite a few really young birds too.

Ive not shot a pigeon on wheat/barley stubble as yet, missed out on some early on though.

  3. 8 hours ago, motty said:

Clays do not behave in any way similar to a bird. Clays are thrown at certain angles (also different sizes used) to deceive the shooter. This is what can catch the "occasional" clay shot out, who is otherwise a very good live bird shooter.

Agree 100%. Cant possibly say a good shot will hit everything clay or game etc.

They’re all different in how they’re presented for a start, and clays are thrown at angles you’ll never see a pigeon or pheasant flying like.

It’s very possible to be a very competent shot at one discipline but not another in my experience!

  4. That’s some going shooting that many in half an hour, warmed the barrels up nicely!! Too late perhaps, but good while it lasted eh.

I shot 62 in an hour a few years back on some pea stubble when the farmer turned up to disc it in, that was hectic enough.

  5. Really does wind me up this sort of thing, same goes for poor pheasant shooting when you’ve paid good money.

I know nothing is guaranteed but I could guarantee more than 8 shots for the day if I chose to take people out for money (which I wouldn’t do anyway) as I’d have done decent recce work beforehand.

Sounds like the area had been overshot and there was nothing left for your visit so he just left you there in hope you might be lucky! Feel for you as that’s an expensive and disappointing mistake, as well as a poor show on A1 decoys part.....sounds like they shouldn’t be advertising such a service and stick to decoys.

  6. If you want it on its own dedicated circuit and you already have a modern fuseboard with 30ma rcd protection it doesn’t sound like it would be a huge job for an electrician to run an armoured supply and install an outdoor rated socket.

Difficult to assume how easy/difficult it might be of course but I’d guess at £100-£150 assuming the above.

If you use a registered electrician there will be no need to worry about building regs, he will just supply the appropriate certification and notify building control if needed.

  7. I don’t think someone having a rant in the shop is justification to go and tell the fao he might be a danger (which is what you’ll be doing really). Doesn’t sound like he was aggressive in the physical sense of the word or was going to be?

Sounds like it’s blown out of proportion to me now you’ve spent so much time thinking about it, although I agree he was in the wrong to lose his temper and make such a big deal of simply having to return with his certificate!

Customers are hard enough work at the best of times, but you’ve clearly got an awkward one there. Do what you can to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and move on.

  8. Biggest rip off going are boiler installs, but I’m afraid very few gas fitters will work for a reasonable labour cost these days when everyone else is making an easy £1000 plus in a day fitting combi boilers! It’s not all clear profit of course, being gas safe registered etc but every plumber I know rubs his hands together at the thought of a boiler change!!

Sounds like you got a good deal ?

  9. As said above, if Edd's a builder he will get a preferential rate I expect. I'd expect to pay double that for a rewire to a decent spec with extractor fan/smoke detectors etc. Obviously as also said you'll save considerably if you can do all the donkey work/floors up and chasing out especially when it's an empty house.

Whether or not it 'needs' a rewire is another matter, but if you're doing a full refurb is makes sense while it's empty and floors are coming up etc.

  10. As already said, underfloor heating isn't going to be ideal for what you're after in the sense of drying their coats quickly.....it creates an ambient heat rather than one for drying things etc and won't do anything when just put on for 20 minutes. A second instant heat source might be good for when you want a quick blast of heat?

  11. its each to there own I don't look down on anyone wanting to shoot them we just choose to leave the very easy birds and try to pick out a decent shot

I much prefer to shoot older birds as well, just can't resist taking easy shots when that's all I'm faced with. You're right it's not as satisfying, I prefer a more sporting shot too!

  12. I am a bit less merciful when it comes to young pigeons. I will only let them go if an adult bird offers a better chance.

    Good bag, Daz.

Honest Motty, I'm much the same and would never sit and watch them fluttering in and out of the decoys without firing!

Cracking bag Daz, nice number to shoot of an afternoon.

The weather has put pay to a few outings for me lately, annoying.

  13. Blimey, ether the apprentice did the wiring or the electrician was off that day so someone else has to do it and it's their first time......talk about rough! I'm an electrician, if things look rough they usually hide other poor work/incorrect procedures etc. No need at all for that tangled mess in the loft, should be clipped along the joists etc.

Is your local authority not interested in coming out to look at the job or are they satisfied with it?

I'd imagine whichever sub contractor has done that would be removed from the list!

  14. Anyway back to your day on the peas, yep, you cannot beat a good wind and as you say it makes for some interesting shooting, that's not a bag of pigeons for 4:1/2 hours shooting, hope you get a few more days like it. :good:

As a rule I prefer it a little less windy haha, was hard work keeping the hide poles from falling over!

Was a nice steady session with no lulls or having to wait long for a pigeon to appear, but not too frantic either.

Not sure there will be another day like that on them but hopefully another decent opportunity will turn up!

  15. Excellent day and a good report to go with it Dave , our Peas are just a distant memory now , we had a few half tidy days during early growth and hardly no more till just before vining , then we started on the first laid bits of barley .

old'un....... I'm sure your way is easy when you know how , but I am a complete dunce when it comes to trying to work that out. me and my daughter followed the way Danger Mouse explained the way to do it on imgBB.com , I haven't used it yet but I think I have cracked it and hopefully be able to put a photo on the forum before to long .

There are no vining peas grown round here, ours are for feed so sprayed off and left to go rock hard and spilling out of the pods before they're combined (which is when the pigeons usually really hit them if they're going to)!

Rarely ever get a decent bag when they're green.

  16. Any idea if there's an easy way to upload pics onto here via an app from my iPhone....used to be easy with Photobucket and copying the image code but that doesn't work now they've taken away that option to get you to pay for the privilege!

  17. Had a cracking day yesterday in one of the strongest winds I've decoyed in.....made the shooting harder but made for cracking shots with long birds flying into the wind going backwards when hit and some doing some real aerobatics to get into the pattern from height!

A block of peas that pigeons haven't shown any interest in from drilling until now, been watching the field for over a week and even though another shooter had a go in the week that just pushed the birds to where we wanted to get anyway!

Setup at 13:30 , finished just before 18:00. Due to the wind there was no hedge to set up by so went for a bet hide in more or less open ground with just a grass bank behind the hide which worked a treat.

Steady flow of pigeons all afternoon, hundreds went over at a great height and couldn't get in to the decoys....plenty did though and picked 124.

Been a really good spell from the first bag on laid barley through to now, not sure how much longer it's going to continue though!

Just realised Photobucket no longer works, any idea how I can post pics now?
