  1. +1 on Bowkett my s10 shoots better than my kalibre kricket after he blue printed it!
  2. When I was 7 my dad taught me with a bsa gold star. I could hardly lift the thing, then a meteor came my way and it was definitely easy to use then a lightning with a gas ram instead of a spring and that was great....... but now being 26 i can look back and say that not the weight or power were actually important. The most disheartening thing all the time I have been shooting is accuracy. I was so unhappy knowing that even if I got everything perfect 10 times in a row my groups could still be poor if the gun was poor. Everyone is different so I couldn’t say what will motivate you’re lad, but if I knew what I knew now.... I would get the most accurate gun possible and shoot from a rest if I couldn’t hold it. I have a Bowkett tuned bsa super 10 that I love and a kalibre kricket. Still striving for more accuracy nearly 10 years later but now it’s me and not the gun ?
  3. Fixed from factory on my mossberg, Cookoff assured me that a good subsonic home loaded cartridge has a full pattern through any choke, while I haven't actually pattern tested the cartriges I am very comfortable that 40-45 yards is not a problem on a pigeon..... I have shot allot further but you need to pick the birds you shoot (defiantly see the head) and get out infront of it so you raise the chance of a head shot!!
  4. I have the 12g pump, it's all I ever use even when noise wouldn't be an issue........ Use anything enough and you will become proficient with it!
  5. Will check to see if the spring is stainless and the rust is just off the tube, had no real choice other than to polish the inside as the corrosion was making things stick, will see if I can get a new one. Thanks for the advice
  6. Hi all, had my mossberg 500 hushpower a while now. When I first got it I stripped the whole lot down to find it had never had the magazine tube cleaned. It was pretty dirty and rusty in there!!! I bought the "wolf" extra springy spring and aluminium slider then with a emery cloth polished the inside of the mag tube. I now find myself constantly stripping that magazine tube and finding the spring and tube starting to rust!!! I am wary of giving it a heavy coat of oil as I keep reading it could make the primers useless and collect more dirt. Anyone have this issue or a solution? Kind regards Mat
  7. I Second loading your own, I shoot exclusively with a hushpower, cookoff helped me get on track. Loading is another enjoyable hobby and if you make your own lead shot you will save plenty!!! I get lead for nothing so it cost me £120 for a thousand cartriges using new hulls, (very little saving using once fired) Just recently had some big days on pigeons and not once did I wish I was using a normal shotgun with factory rounds! 32g Size 3/4 lead in a good patten won't let much past!! Don't let the lead roundness and hardness obsessed people scare you to much..... Load it and shoot, pigeons just don't care!!! P.m if you want any help with shot making, i promise it's not difficult!
  8. So after a good day out the limp came back!!! His foot looked fine and there was no sign of any issues other than skin abrasion caused by grass and things from where he has no fun on that foot....... Checked again in the morning and there was now a lump. But no weeping or anything! Called the vets a went down there. Long story short.... I had obviously just pulled the husk of that grass seed out a week ago. Its totally my fault and fortunately he will be fine. BE WARNED GRASS IS VERY VERY AGGRESSIVE, HAS NO FEAR OF A 12G AND ITS EVERYWHERE!!!! ha ha ha All joking aside I suffer from hay-fever really bad and now my dog is getting beaten up by the same stuff! Who would have thought GRASS can render me and my dog temporarily lame! Keep an eye on your dogs people
  9. Sorry to drag this up but while at work tonight my partner messaged to let me know the dog had developed a limp, on arrival home he was indeed limping, now he never makes a fuss of any injuries so I had a poke around and a squeeze but couldn't find anything obvious and almost assumed it was a sprain and left him to rest it, then I noticed a little clump of wet fur ontop of his foot between the toes (webbing) I carefully cut the fur back and there it was..... Tip of a grass seed!!!! Removed it with a pair of tweezers, poor little ****** had about 1cm of seed in his foot! Cleaned it up with salt water and cut the fur right back so I can keep an eye on it...... He is my first ever dog and a fantastic shooting buddy, words don't really do the relationship between a man and his dog justice! A Massive thank you to the person who posted this thread.... Without It I would never have thought to look so hard and my dog could have ended up a lot worse off! Thanks again Mat
  10. What does everyone do with a big bag of rooks tho? Will ferrets and birds of pray eat them?
  11. Wayyyyyyyyy steady down people, I said "carcas" to me that means breast less pigion!! I assure you my freezer is brimming with pigeon right now! Can't remember what the op said but I guess he means the same? I do my best to use any meat I have spare to trade with locals for lead. No one should be throwing a whole pigeon away!
  12. Donkey if you see this you have p.m
  13. Buy a vacuum sealer if you are going to get allot and you don't have much room, best thing ever in my household, looks very presentable too if you're doing trades with pigeon
  14. Shot my first big bag today, have no idea what to do with two bin bags of pigeon carcasses!!! Bin man comes once a fortnight and no way am I keeping them that long this time of year!!! Just going to take them to the tip tomorrow, every household has different "household waste" ha ha
  15. Lead shot is easy to make in clay sizes
  16. Hopefully I will be buying a new press from a chap off here In the next couple of days.... If you genuinely want to start re-loading you can have my lee loadall for the cost of postage .... Only if you promise to do the same for the next person who wants to start when you upgrade It's a fantastic hobby and I would reommend it to everyone, also make you're own lead shot, it's not as hard as people will have you believe Kind regards Mat
  17. Looking at them now I was perfectly happy with the lee untill I had a good day and suddenly needed to reload 500 for the next time!!! The noise that flippin spring makes with every single movement drove me crazy!!!!!
  18. Hello all, Does anyone have a 12g reloading press I can buy? I have a lee load-all but I am looking for something faster, Kind regards Mat
  19. Pleased to see someone posting a real imperfect story, I read this yesterday and worried it would be slandered, such a shame that the truth is so often hidden for fear it will upset someone, Good story and congrats on the fox
  20. that's my pride and joy you are talking about Thank you everyone for your kind words..... Not you tho bruno22, you can get stuffed ha ha ha
  21. Hello all This is my first attempt at sharing some photos I am very new the shotgun shooting but have been a fac air rifle shooter for a while I have a mossberg 500 hushpower with a spare regular barrel I recently visited the Isle of Man to do some shooting and had great success, unfortunately I didn't travel in my own car so didn't take my own guns. This was our best day.. Ending on 81 picked up birds with maybe another 10 lost to the long grass and thick cover next to us. I had no decent shooting grounds back at home and having read Archie coats book I realised I had been going about finding some all wrong! Look for a bird problem then offer to "solve it" so with this in mind I gained a new permission And what a place!!! Roughly 200 birds on each of the 5 fields!! I picked the wrong one and the wrong end and got this Turned them into this with my new toy I hope to go again this week and I should have a much much bigger haul!!! Can only shoot with the hushpower due to the farmers requirements Big thanks to the shotgun community for all there help with everything! Special thanks and shout to folkstone engineering for being so helpful!! Highly reccomend him to everyone Kind regards Mat
  22. You frightend the life out of me :O I reloaded 150 of these yesterday!!!! Having just done a little panic reading the componts resume there original position after firing and even if they didn't i just wouldn't get the claimed "reduced recoil"... I am loading subsonics for my hushpower so if it kicked any less I wouldn't even know it had gone off The brass shell part does bulge once fired but is resized before reloading
  23. 500 would keep me going for a while
  24. I am in christchurch, (Bournemouth area) I have never been to a clay ground before...... Can I just rock up and forrage for empties? Thanks Mat
