  1. No need to carry it, plod can check instantly if you have an SGC. If you want to have a picture of it in your phone.
  2. Great idea but my cabinet is stuffed to the gunnels at the moment!
  3. Thanks guys. Wabbitbosher has helped me no end with this gun for spares and a forend but still want a synthetic one while I refinish what I have. Will try the leads you have all suggested. Cheers!!!
  4. I am planning to refinish the stock and foreend on my 1930 Browning Auto5, needs alot of work and I want to take my time over it. I want to stick something on while I am refinishing so at least I can use the gun. I have been looking at synthetic stock sets from the likes of RamLine etc on the US websites but cant find anywhere in the UK that seems to have them. Brownells UK dont list them and actually most of the US sites seem to be out of stock as well. Wondered if anyone had stumbled over a UK based source of RamLine or other producers of such products? Thanks in advance!
  5. The gun has an oiled finish so I don't believe nitromors will be effective. Would soaking in acetone or meths work?
  6. Ok guys thanks for the advice. I'll crack on and do it by hand.
  7. I am about to start refinishing the stock on my old Browning Auto-5. I have a door and wood stripping company near where I live and was considering getting them go professionally dip and strip the stock and forend. I just wondered if anyone has ever done this and how it turned out? According to their website they do a whole door for 30 quid so it should be a cheap option as well.
  8. Sorry double post. Please delete this thread.
  9. Welcome to PW! I can only support what everyone has said go to the Wabbitbosher he'll see you right and you can buy with total confidence from him top bloke! He's helped me out with some hard to find parts for my old Browning Auto-5 recently. Oh and as oowee says buy a bigger cabinet than you think you'll need. Trust me you'll fill it!! Mines bursting at the seams at the moment and I wish I had gone for a bigger one!!
  10. Lucky man there pretty rare I've been after one for a while. What you describe is normal my silver kestrel sidelock is exactly the same actually a bit of a ****** to close after both barrels have been fired. As GordonR says your compressing the ejector springs when closing. Got any pics of the gun?
  11. "Any shooter going to a doctor for general "stress at work" should really be warned about what you are actually saying, how it is recorded by the doctor and how it is reported by the doctor and how you report it on your renewal." Well put Malkiserow. This is my point exactly, so with the prospect of armed response turning up to "check" that all is well if someone goes to their GP and reports stress or some minor stress related issue then that could make a perfectly lay abiding, well balanced SGC or FAC holder think twice and then not go. The problem remains un-diagnosed and untreated and potentially getting worse. I have a huge amount of respect for the police but I wonder what they really mean when they say they are coming round to check, surely they cant find out most info initially from a PNC check. Are they expecting someone to be dressed in camo with a pair of knickers on their head, sat in the loft with a shotgun and a half empty bottle of Wild Turkey?
  12. I cant believe this, everyone at some point in their lives is going to go through a stressful period. Does this suggest that if someone goes to the doctor or loses a job, loved one etc etc etc the immediate assumption is that they are going to lose the plot are wreak havoc with whatever guns they hold? I am sure it will cause balanced and responsible gun owners to think twice about going to the doctors which surely is worse. I would be extremely worried if I had been prescribed sleeping tablets or been to see my GP with some stress related issue and then armed police arrive at my house. If they feel the need to remove someones guns on this basis them I assume they will also confiscate any blunt instruments, edged tools, kitchen knives, chainsaws.... the list goes on! I absolutely agree that the police need to protect the public but this implies a massive lack of trust on lawful gun owners.
  13. Used be a great one in Brierley Hill, cant remember the name though. Will try and dig it out.
  14. That was exactly it, a very simple request for opinions and views from this community as I haven't been in this situation before. I was NOT in anyway intending to start a debate over the relative moral values of the building trade! I wish I hadn't asked now!
  15. Thanks figgy, wood us nicely figured I plan to refinish the stock at some point. Chequering is virtually worn smooth though not sure what to do about that. As for the direction of the ring i think so, bevel is supposed to face the muzzle as far as I know.
  16. Thanks all, thought I would post some pics in case anyone can comment on the friction ring setup or general age etc...
  17. Thanks Tony R. So your saying that the bevel edge of the brass friction ring should be reversed from what the manual says? Ie facing the stock not the muzzle?
  18. According to some of the American websites it should cycle 1oz loads if the friction rings are setup the right way.
  19. Picked up an old A5 this week, from my research I think its a 1930 model (serial starts with 15) and is in fairly good cosmetic and mechanical condition. I bought it from a RFD and he let me try it before I purchased, it had a few problems cycling low power loads, but thanks to the legend that is Wabbitbosher I had purchased a set of spares including a recoil spring and various friction rings. Over the weekend I have cleaned her up and kind of fallen for the old girl, it just seems to mount and point so well and the history of the gun is really fascinating. I think I would like to get it properly stripped, cleaned and serviced and wondered if anyone could recommend a gunsmith that has experience of old A5's I could speak to and discuss getting it sorted? I reckon I could do some of it myself although my screwdrivers dont fit the ridiculously small slotted screws however Brownells list a specialised set for the A5. Any tips etc as always gratefully received, very tempted to leave my clay gun in the cabinet and take it out for tomorrows clay shooting, but just a bit worried if it fails to cycle properly. Cheers
  20. Guys is was only asking for views I didn't in any way imply a lack of trust in the building trade. My post was only aiming to look at what common practice is in this situation!
  21. Definitely don want to RFD the guns, and I agree a cover of the cabinet would be a good idea. Thanks, appreciate everyone's opinions. !
