  1. I've only picked one up in a gun shop and found the rubber butt pad to be VERY rubbery, sticky and catches on clothes. Has anyone who has one had a problem with them or swapped the butt pad out?

  2. I have a Leatherman Surge with bit extender and a small penlight. Use it every single day on the farm. Only had it a few years and genuinely dont know how I got on without it. Actually I do, I was in and out of the toolshed all bloody day long.....

It is all down to usage, IF you are using the trap for several hours a couple of times a week, then I would suggest a leisure battery. On the other hand if the trap is only chucking around 100 targets on one day a week, then the smaller battery will fit the bill. We had a member who was a mechanic at the local VW agents and he could supply us with nearly new 12 volt car batteries. These were taken off cars that belonged to little old Ladies who went shopping once a week and had everything electric in the car going full chat, a new battery was fitted under warranty and the 'old' battery scrapped  ? Anyway we got them and they were like new. I think the longest they lasted was around 2 months. They just could not take the constant charge/discharge that a clay trap puts on them. The leisure battery, correctly charged, can.

Well I have ordered an 110 ah leisure battery that should be delivered in the next few days. Will be used a fair bit in next 6 weeks as we are in lock down here in Ireland and then a few times a month. 110 ah should mean it can take a fair bit of use, I will have an old car battery as a back up but plan to use the leisure battery as much as I can.

Having used all Pro-Matic traps at a shooting ground, we bought 85a/h batteries. Do NOT use a standard car battery charger though, it cooks them, as we found out to our cost. Invest in a decent trickle charger intended for leisure batteries. Shooting on a Wednesday and a Sunday, we left 2 batteries on trickle charge, then swapped them around on the Wednesday, they were then ready for use on the Sunday.

    Perfect. Thanks

Also, when clays break being thrown they can go any which way. If I still had a nice Landrover then I would not want it getting splattered with clays or distractingly in my eyeline as I swing through a shot.

Point taken. Do you have to recharge leisure batteries after each use or will they last a number of shoots?

  6. The guy I bought it from also suggested using the Land rover I'd be bringing it up the fields with. Crack the hood use the battery with engine running and some jump leads running to the trap. Does anyone use this method as in theory this would be the handiest as you don't have to lug a battery around

  7. I just bought myself a Promatic Pigeon after a few years of just using a manual trap on the farm it's a joy! I am using am old car battery at the moment that doesn't hold much of a charge. I was going to buy one of those leisure batteries. Is there a minimum power rating like the AH I would need to buy to make sure it's powerful enough to turn the motor? I have zero experience with these and there is a massive variety of leisure batteries with wildly different prices.

Did you strip the firing pin right out of it? If your firing pin is being stuck in the forward position then it could come forward onto a primer in the same way an open bolt machine gun does, rather than a double discharge as you would get from an o/u what you are having is a runaway gun. I would check your firing pin and the trigger internals for damage or anything to suggest that the firing pin may be held forward.

If that happened in my semi auto .22 with the 30rd mag things could get interesting!

For me, I didnt strip the firing pin out. I did put the bolt through an ultrasonic cleaner I have , blew air through it and re lubricated. To be honest the bolt looked sparkling so thats why I didnt strip it down completely. Not saying that it isnt a firing pin issue, but it wasnt something that seemed likely.... another thing to check tomorrow.

    Agree with Rob85 + others ...

My money is on an issue with the bolt housing the firing pin, or trigger mechanism.

A thorough strip, inspect and clean should find the issue ... I can't see how it would be on the gas side.

    Take care !!

The only thing I noticed with the trigger was a spring that seemed slightly, and I mean slightly loose.

That doesn't sound very good, watching with great interest.

No its not. And am assuming a trip to gunsmith will cost as much as the gun is worth. If the gun was worth anything I'd just bring it straight to the gunsmith and not even stress about it.

  9. Hi there,

I have a cheap Yildiz semi auto that has recently started to double discharge or double fire on a single pull of the trigger. When it first happened I was out in the field and it was a snap shot so I thought i didnt have the stock tight to the shoulder and was "bump stocking" it. Its started to happen a bit more regularly, so I completely stripped the gun down and cleaned it and couldnt see an issue. Is there anything I could be looking for? I use felt wads mainly so I was wondering if the gas ports got a bit blocked could this cause a double discharge. Or is it usually something else? I just gave the area around the gas ports a good soak and scrub and will check tomorrow if that has done anything. Its not an expensive gun, but its been reliable until now and I shoot well with it. So was just hoping to get peoples views or experiences!!!

"But probably I'd try and talk myself into leaving well alone."

It's a constant battle, I really want to get the forend latch off and give it a good scrub, but may admit defeat on this...... for now. I'm hoping in the near future some new technologies will have nanobots who can crawl in there and extract this for me.

If you absolutely have to take it out....for example wanting to repair or replace it you could try a fine flat punch or sacrificial screwdriver and a hammer to tap it anti clockwise. Could also try a dot of cold weld compound or epoxy and stick a piece of metal onto it, grab with vise grips and unscrew it.

Thanks for the advice. Its not essential that it be removed, beyond the fact that if it is like the rest of the gun there is going to be a ton of crud between the metal and wood which offends my sensibilities in general. Buf it there is a chance of causing greater harm, Id probably take Tightchoke's advice and leave well enough alone. I just wanted to see if there was some little trick/gadget that I'd missed over the years. I did try tapping with an old screwdriver to try and turn it, but its well screwed in and I was reluctant to hit any harder than I was.

  12. Hello all,

I bought an old Merkel Model 8 circa 1974 recently. Its in good condition (except for the trigger pull). I did notice when I was giving a good clean that one of the screw heads is completely snapped off, so I only have one side of the screw head to work with. The bottom of the screw comes out at the top of the forend latch in photo 1. Just wondering what would be the best way to get this screw out without damaging the woodwork?? I have tried to search for an answer but it always gives me details about screws snapped in half.  I didnt notice at the time because it was full of 40 yr old dirt as was everything else....

  13. Anyone know if there is a type of glove with fleece or lined on the back of the hands but just thin leather or fabric for palm and fingers? Tried Google searching but hard to describe it without getting all lined gloves. It's the back of the hands that get cold for me, getting hit by the wind, can usually curl the fingers around gun for protection

  14. I had laser eye surgery last Wednesday and all has gone well. Will take a couple of weeks off to let the eyes adjust before I shoot.

I have worn glasses for 30 years out of 40 odd and always had them on when shooting. I want to buy some shooting glasses for clays and occasional rough shooting. I am broke after the laser eye surgery, can anyone recommend some bargain basement glasses to use (under 100 ideally) while the bank balance recovers? (I really am broke!)
