Under £200 with extra battery, chain oil and a spare chain. Bargain.

Which model is that? If it's the MSA120 that's a very good price. It's usually around £220ish inc VAT for the saw, battery and charger.

I've had mine now for a couple of years and it's been great. Not as powerful as the 170 but very useful for small jobs. Mines done a large amount of work and still goes well.

  2. I know a fair bit about it. I would have thought someone would know if their firearm was a lever release or MARS action. Note, it's not a lever action such as a Marlin but a small lever that releases the bolt that locks back when the rifle is fired.

    Firearms

Sections 54 of the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 amends section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968 to make rapid firing rifles and bump stocks subject to general prohibition across England, Scotland and Wales, which means they cannot be held without the authority of the Secretary of State or Scottish Ministers.

As a result of these amendments, rapid firing rifles will no longer be able to be held on a firearm certificate. These are defined as any rifle with a chamber from which empty cartridge cases are extracted using energy from propellant gas, or energy imparted to a spring or other energy storage device by propellant gas, other than a rifle which is chambered for .22 rim-fire cartridges.

Section 55 of the Offensive Weapons Act makes corresponding amendments to Article 45 of the Firearms (Northern Ireland) Order 2004.

  3. This sort of law sounds fine in principle but I do wonder how it would work in practice.

I'm a country boy and happy with noises and smells of what I think the country should be like. I actually get disappointed when the sheep aren't in the fields surrounding our house and although a tad worrying I was quite amused by the cows, calves and entire bull that escaped and spend a few weeks in our woodland.

However, I'm happy to admit I wouldn't be that impressed if an industrial farm set up right next to me with 24/7 floodlights and a huge slurry pit. Equally I wouldn't site our bee hives right on the edge of our property and expect neighbouring holiday homes to put up with some grumpy bees.

  4. Another thing to think about with reloading is you can hold as many component parts as you wish.

I don't live that close to an RFD so it's handy to have a decent stock of parts so I don't need to go and buy ammo that often. (I target shoot so can get through a fair bit). You can also get bullets via the post, so you only need to hold primers and powder.

  5. Any of the alkylate fuels are good if you don't use the saw that often. Aspen, MotoMix or the Husky version.

They don't contain the ethanol that pump fuel does (which absorbs water over time and can damage rubber and plastic parts) and other harmful products. They also have a shelf life of years so you don't need to drain a saw. More expensive though.

  6. I've got a few hundred hazel trees, they can produce quite a few nuts if you can keep the squirrels off. The can be affected by frost as the female flowers come out very early.

I've got a few acres that were planted up by the previous owner about 30 years ago. It's noticeable that some of the hazel trees produce much bigger nuts than others, so you'll be taking your chances by growing some native trees. I'm currently growing my own trees on from the largest nuts, hoping they will produce larger nuts.

You could try a mix, I have a few cobs and filberts and they seem to flower at a similar time to the wild trees.

I gather the way to get them to fruit well is not only pruning but brutting the shoots in summer (breaking them).

As has been said the pigs will damage the trees if left for any length of time although could could fence around the base.

If your soil is alkaline then it would be worth looking at truffle trees but you will need to keep the pigs off.

  7. Well I'm using a little Webley & Scott bolt action .410 for my experiments but intend to use the cartridges in any .410 if I can get something that works reliably.

As theshootist says, I've also had just the primer only go off and all contents of the cartridge just empty out the end of the gun.

I did find a fairly light crimp worked, so I'll try and couple of cartridges and reload them a few times to see how long they last. I was mainly aiming for a non-toxic load so don't plan on shooting that many, can't afford to.

  8. You can actually buy conductive glue. It looks rather expensive and some of the reviews don't seem to be great, but might be worth looking at if you don't have a soldering iron or don't want to risk heat damage.

  9. I don't have a problem with primers as I have a FAC as well. I'm trying to get Alliant .410 to work but struggling a little with getting the powder to ignite every time and burn cleanly. I think the magtech brass could do with a 435 over powder card or something. It works fine if I crimp the brass or if I use a .45 cal black powder wad. I also had no problem with pyrodex but I'd rather not have to clean the gun so often.

I note you mention large rifle primers, I use large pistol primers and a bit of a search shows most people use the pistol primers. Tempted to see what a rifle primer would do but I assume it would increase the pressure.

  10. There's loads of information out there about reloading .410 brass cases, but I've yet to find a simple step-by-step guide or some decent instructions.

Anyway, I've been using CBC/Magtech cases to varying success. It does require larger wads than plastic cases and the reformed 303s may also require larger wads (Hopefully someone can confirm?).

I got mine from clay and game in the end, 430 over powder (nitro) cards, 430 wads and 450 over shot cards.

Cheaper to punch your own and I've been experimenting with punches and old cartridge cases converted to punches.

Do you know what powder you are going to use?

  11. I've got a fully modded Baikal .410 and about a dozen types of different .410 cartridges including these little 2" 9s. When I get round to it I'm going to dig out my sound meter and take some measurements. Purely for a bit of fun as I don't need mine to be completely silent, just reduce the noise.

  12. As has been said, plumbers and builders/roofers worth asking. I've seen it for sale in local auctions/ house clearance places.

I've also collected a bucket of old fishing weights at a local beach.

Out of interest, should lead shot be made from pure lead or an alloy with something like antimony?

If it needs to be pure then take care, I've even found some roofing lead to not be pure lead. And has been mentioned many wheel weights these days aren't lead.

Rather unscientifically based on what they had in the shop! I’ve got a kilo to work my way through so hopefully I can get it to work

You're learning! I've only been reloading a few years and you get used to powders being out of stock or worse, being banned. I'm sure N150 will work well.

Another thing you'll come across is if you look up reloading data in 5 different places you'll often get 5 different min/max loads etc.

Soon as you start getting a few they will attract more. Keep and spillage swept up as can attract rats. We have lots of dunnocks that clear up.under our feeders.

Keeping the feeders clean and clearing up old food is also essential to prevent disease.

I'm not a fan of overfeeding wild birds, I tend to encourage them naturally by leaving seed heads about the place and encouraging as many berry and other fruit bearing plants about the place.
