DB had a request to shoot a small conifer wood a month ago due to the amount of crows using it as a roost. When he was set up he shot twenty five pigeons and one crow , not through choice but the pigeons came in and the crows just circled higher and higher above the wood with the pigeons not being phased by the extreme shots at the crows but coming in confidently. The crows would just normally leave the area but stayed which was weird.

Not shooting at present as I was blue lighted to hospital just before Christmas after collapsing with a temp of 41 degrees and stayed ten days with Pneumonia and anaemia. Still under the hospital on weekly visits and lost muscle mass. Due to the fact that I feel weak I will be out in a few weeks, DB and BB have offered to take me out and act as ghillies, for which I thank them.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, in the 80s I was running a warehouse in Coventry for BL ltd and we had a mini come in from the Longbridge plant in Birmingham. This mini was constantly dribbling water out of the exhaust. Following the question we were told it was running on Hydrogen.

I went past the M5 field twice last week and did not see a bird like you say. I then went to Nuneaton and saw a large flock flying over rape but not settling, they are about.

Just one observation, people talk about the pigeons in the woods and Oldun says the Keeper has not seen many birds in his woods.
I’ve stated this many times in the past that I and BB shoot the ancient Forest of Arden which is predominantly deciduous with Beech and Oaks so we do keep the birds for some time, out of sight. This Forest historically covered Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire.Less shoots operate on these estates now as they have been taken over by the Leisure industries for golf and fishing. The Packington Estate being one.This allows the birds to feed when they like on the natural foods. I’m not aware of the nutritional value of the vast conifer woods but I do realise the value of these as a warm roost wood.
Currently in my locality we have large amounts of acorns still available for the birds to feed on, these individual trees are a small amount to the amount in the woods. None of these acorns have started to rot as the cold weather has helped to preserve them longer as we normally have wet weather which rots them.
I’m sure that normal service will be resumed in a few weeks and BB will be displaying mega bags of birds on rape fields.

Well done Ben, a Birthday Treat!!. I watched a line while walking the dog this morning and somebody was shooting further down the line. As you reported they are still on acorns. Thanks for posting.

Well done Ben, we need six inches of snow to cover the acorns in the woods then sunshine to expose the rape in the fields.

I can remember not shooting any good bags of birds in the 70s until the end of the game season . The only way we shot birds was the shoot first light on the rape picking up on known flightlines from roost and then pack up and move to perhaps clover, cabbage and sprouts. We could pick up 50 plus birds in an hour in the late afternoon when they we topping up for roost when you find the right field.
Knowing your land can lead you to shooting pigeons.

My original pigeon magnet that I’ve had for 25 plus years which I still use today has the ability to flap the wings via a central cam and Bowden cables. It took ages to set up and made no difference as the birds flared when they approached the magnet. The incoming birds are cautious of lifting birds.
The same effect can be achieved with a battery mounted between the two angled arms and two FF6s

Well done BB at least you have found some to shoot, with the forecast of slightly colder weather to come perhaps they will start on the rape if the acorns are frozen to the ground in the woods. Your a right “ Tackle Tart” always changing calibres, 12, 410, 28 and cartridges. Can someone lend him a 9mm garden gun??????

Both myself and DB never stop looking for pigeons, diverting on flightlines when travelling to children's houses , taking the wife to WI. Going out on one route and returning another. Walking the dog along the canal and watching flightlines for further reference.

Well done JD, it’s nice to read that we have some pigeons left in this country. Perhaps when you moved North that the Cotswolds became a pigeon sanctuary and they only feed the first hour of light. I hope your feeling well and building up your strength to allow you to carry more cartridges in the future. Again well done and thanks for posting.

JDog thanks for the information concerning your return to the Cotswolds, with your future attacks on the hoards of pigeons it may spook a few up to the Midlands. Good luck with the move and I hope it all goes we.
I downsized eighteen months ago and even with a 10X2mtr Man Cave still can’t find all that I want. This was the final move of the plan and last years hot summer certainly tested the freezers and three fans in the garage but I’m working on that.

If you are correct in saying no one is/will shoot them during the winter then farmers will just look for alternatives, and I am sure if there's a market for such things someone will get their invention head on.
Having said that, a couple of well placed gas-guns will keep pigeons off a field, unless they are starving as I have seen in the past.
The price of rope bangers and gas may stop certain farmers from spending money, I was thinking of putting an order in at Anne Summers for some blow up dolls and put out in the field with a air pump and random timer but knowing the “ woke” society they would have the Police and Air Ambulance out!!! Mind you that will move the pigeons.
With the advent of the drones, that may be an option to have a drone programmed to fly round the specific fields on a random nature.

Well done BB , 48 is a good number in the current situation, it proves that if you put the miles in you can find a days sport.
I had the situation on Sunday that I had a bird in the garden driving the dog mad sitting on the shed roof , it looked drunk and I nearly caught it with a landing net which made me think of Avian Flu??
We have not received reports of dead birds.
I predict that the birds will appear in numbers in time when they are focused on the food supply.In the mean time BB keep scanning the fields and reporting your numbers to keep us interested.
