groach1234
Okay well may dad and a friend bid on and won a days shooting at a charity clay day in the summer with the aim for a 300 bird partridge day at the Irby estate in Lincolnshire. It was advised to be double gunning or loaders so i volunteered to by my dad's double gunner loader type thing as he had never done it before and in return he offered for me to shoot one of the 5 drives which i gratefully accepted. So the first drive went well with the double gunning working well with my dad getting a couple of good left and rights. I took the gun for the second drive dropping 5 birds nicely and i was happy as it was blowing one hell of a breeze making the partridge as fast as you wouldn't believe. The in the drinks break between the second and third drive when one of the younger guns probably in his mid to late 20s said would i like to take the spare gun up as his farther could not make it at the last minute?!?!?! and i suppose you can guess the response from me So its the 3rd drive and i'm pegged at 9 out of 9 with a real strong wind by now with it blowing towards me so it boded well. As the drive went on more birds were going over the middle of the line but a large amount still came down with the wind. It was in this drive that I shot with out a doubt the longest and fastest crosser i have ever shot after 5 of the other guns had had a go and missing with both barrels I felt the dogs danglies to say the least, one of the guns applauded me and i have never felt so good. Then another few of the best birds i have ever shot including a few nice folded birds going like **** off a stick that other guns had missed. I have never felt so good ever in my life nor have i shot so well. Then a break for lunch and what a lunch it was. It was also a chance to speak to the other guns who were all both nice and interesting. Then out again for 2 more drives to try to get the bag. The first of them i dropped one partridge before all the other guns were on their pegs but being at 2 with the wind going down the line i doubted i would get many shots which i didn't finishing that drive with 3 birds for 6 shots. Then onto the last drive of a truly wonderful day. I was told i had a great peg by a rather eccentric member of the regular syndicate. I ended up with a good half dozen nice birds but could have had at least 10 more but they were maybe a bit on the low side as they flying into the wind so best left for another day. Needless to say it was with out a shadow of a doubt the best shooting and indeed the by far the hardest shooting i have ever done due to the strongest wind i have shot in with a end result of 279 birds primarily French partridge with 4 english and a half dozen pheasant. (sorry for the long winded write up but i'm still very much over the moon to say the least  ) Edited October 16, 2009 by groach1234
