GRUMPY
Hi Guys What an amazing site. How have I never found it before. Howsomever, I'd really appreciate some advice. I've just got my ticket for an fac air rifle, a .22lr and a .17 hmr mostly for bunnies. The air rifle was an after thought and in fact the suggestion of the visiting FAO who recommended 28 - 32 ft-lbs. and a .177 !! Every gunsmith I've spoken to is suprised and all recommended a .22 for bunnies and possibly a little more power. Your thoughts please and in particlar what to go for ? I really rather like the look of the BSA Ultra multi, 'cos I'm not over keen on a bolt action. but I'm guessing unless I go for something like A Super 10 or an r10 with a big bottle on the front I'm not going to get that many shots per fill. Next question and I'm sure you professionals will be amused by this and it's the choice of a .22lr. Now don't laugh but I quite like the look of a Winchester 9422 under lever - I did say I didn't like bolt action but can I fit a moderator and still load the magazine without having to remove the mod each time? ( I think its a childhood thing with all the westerns that were shown on the telly in those days ) Your thoughts please ! Grumpy
GP1
Welcome Grumpy from Norfolk the debate over .177 & .22 will go on for a long time as for power its down to you, i have used 12fpe and 110 fpe both kill the rabbit, how far are you shooting out to ? The two rifles you have mentioned are ok i would go with the S10 over the BSA Ultra multi as to power you are on the limit with both rifles at 30fpe, the best bet on a multi shot would be a Rapid but a bit more cash or a Career 707 if you can get hold of one, very easy to tune and you can get some high power levels from it and its like the Winchester 9422 under. What part of Norfolk are you from ? Edited November 2, 2009 by GP1

GRUMPY
Thanks for welcome. I'm not that far from you, GP1 - Larling. Thanks for the pics. Not sure the frilly patterns are quite my thing but had seen the 9422 and thought Cumbria was a long way to go and look. There is another 9422 in Swindon with a moderator on but the guy won't send a picture and just tells me the previous owner made a special clip to allow access to the magazine. In answer to your other question the bunnies seem to know the range of my .22 springer and so I'm looking at 50-60yds for the fac. Going back to the pics, I certainly like the look of the .17 Henry, just my kind of gun.

I put Thetford down as no one know the village i'm in, which is shipdham OK rabbits out to 50 to 60 yards, a good 12fpe PCP would do the job but i would stay around the 28fpe would do the job with a bit more ease, plus with a PCP running at around the 28fpe should give you a good shot count as you don't want to be carting a dive bottle around and filling after 20 shots . GRUMPY
Small world. I know Shipdham very well, I was born there and went to school when it was on the green !! Mr Parry was the head, but thats all I'm saying. OK so 28 lbs. Preferred calibre ??
bullet boy
My Rapid FAC is running at 22ft/lbs and is certainly good enough knocking bunnies over beyond the 50 yard mark.

OK i will start the BIG debate i prefer .22 as i feel it more stable in windy condition and has more clout

GRUMPY
Obviously still a young boy then I must admit I'd favour the .22 and figured that any loss of speed ( and flatter trajectory ) over the .177 could be compensated for with a few more lbs. ! Interested in your Rapid, 'bullet boy' on 22lbs. Which model 7 is it ? Was the custom a special or did they make a Mk 1/2 ? I'd never considered a Theoben as I'd always thought them to be a bit more than I'd wanted to spend, but hell you can't take it with you ! So it seems that the FAO's 28 - 32 lbs would be more than enough, and if I decide to change the calibre to .22 they said they'd do it for nothing. GRUMPY
You're right about the longest village. I've cycled it more times than I care to remember when I was a 'boy' with telegrams. Now that should tell you how old I am.
