Shotgun shooting and the effect on dog's hearing

My lad wanted to being our cute little Westie to a clay shoot today. There are often plenty of well behaved dogs around.

Gun-dogs are of course gun-dogs (and our Westie certainly isn't) and by definition will be exposed to gunfire. But do they have better resistance to loud noise induced deafness than humans?

I don't want to damage my dog's hearing just to let her out for an afternoon in the fresh air doing no useful task!

Also, something tells me I may regret asking this question! :good:

To be honest I do not know the answer to this one. I do a lot of rough shooting and all my shooting pals tell me to get a dog, but for the same reason you raise, I just can't bring myself to subject a dog to the noise of a shotgun.

I have a dog, he's my best mate.

Sorry my post does nothing to answer you question, it's just my take on the matter. :good:

No don't Westies are not bred to be in the field they have stand up ears. Take a look at gundogs and what they all have in common

ears flaps that come down over the opening to the ear to protect their hearing the breeders selected that trait for the purpose

TBH I rarely take my gundogs on clay shoots the noise is a little too concentrated unless they can spend periods away from the shooting

and I would not like my dogs to have another reason for ignoring me.

Thanks for that. Seems obvious now but I never would have guessed.

What a font of knowledge on this forum!
