stuart21
Hi, I bought my first gun on Saturday and it's a cracker. It's a Beretta 686S and is in excellent condition and is a great fit. I just can't wait to get out with it, which hopefull I will do this weekend. But, I have a stupid question, there is a barrel selector in the gun and I'm not sure if it selects the barrel to fire from first or whether it selects just one barrel to shoot from. It's currently set to 2 red dots, is this correct? Also, the guy I bought it from told me to keep in the current chokes (1 X Skeet and 1 X half) as he said that this would be fine for almost everything, is he correct or shall I swop the skeet for a 1/4? Thanks
Cosd
I'm not sure on your gun in particular, but the select switch will just choose whether to shoot top or bottom barrel first. I usually use 1/4 and 1/2 choke on the woodies, and generally shoot 1/4 choke first (bottom barrel) if the birds are in the kill zone and save the 1/2 choke (top barrel) if I miss with the first and the bird is longer range as it scarpers. That's the general idea anyway! Different people will give you different answers regarding chokes, I think 1/4 and 1/2 may be the most popular, but that doesn't make it the right choice. The right choice is what's good for you; My advice is if you ain't used to your gun yet or are a new shooter, don't get to hung up about choke sizes; go for a combination from any advice you get, and stick to it. Once you are comfortable with your gun/shooting, then make your own judgement on whether you need to change it. Best of luck, and lovely new gun you got!! ST3V3
I think from memory should cover the 2 dots Edited November 30, 2009 by ST3V3
jimmyb79
2 red dots is the top barrel and 1 is the bottom. You should have one dot showing to fire from the bottom barrel first. I had a little difficulty remembering this when I first started out until it reminded me of 'lady bits' - 2 at the top, 1 at the bottom! Apologies for lowering the tone, but it worked for me! Good luck with it, its a great gun.

stuart21
Excellent, thanks all! I like the tone lowering as it does help me remember. Cheers
FinFerNan
Hi Stuart I used to own a Berreta 687 Sporter MC, a bit like your 686. TBH I can't remember the barrel selector but "Two is top" rings a bell. As for the chokes, I entirely agree with Cosd. However I do remember my own preference was towards Improved Cyl (your Skeet) in the bottom and 1/4 or 1/2 in the top. This worked for me on most clay stands. Hope it helps you too. I am sure that you'll enjoy your Berreta as much as I miss mine
