ziplex
Just reading about someone wanting a blank firing pistol, when I introduced my GSP to shot I done it with a shotgun over distance, I didn't think i'd have a problem with her and sure enough she wasn't remotely gunshy. My little Springer is a little reserved though so when the time comes what do you suggest? I always thought a blank gives quite a harsh crack compared to a shot gun at distance which is a little softer?

BB Thanks BB, to be honest I took the Pointer to some ground I can use and let off shots at random whilst she was at distance then gradually introduced shots over her just after throwing a dummy, I used some old 28grm shells i'd had lying around.......my thinking is i'll do the same with the little 'un but i'll have to have someone to help as she isn't a big runner like the Pointer (obviously), very attentive and rarely strays out more than 40 yards, which is nice
SSS
I cut the shot and powder out of some cheap cartridges and just fired the primers to start with. Makes a ****ty mess inside your barrels but it's quite effective. When she got a bit older, we took her to the clay ground and introduced her slowly from some distance. Good thing about that is you can comfort the dog if they get scared.
Wiltsmark
I have this w/end just done this with my springer using starting pistol with no problems, however should i do it again with a new pup in the future think i would get the adapter for shotgun and use the blanks probably cheaper in the long run. Delbert
I have always used a kids cap pistol, the type that has the plastic ring of caps for early training and accliamatisation followed by field retrieving (dummy) work when my old mate Chris stands a good distance off and lets the odd shot off. Then throw dummy, shot, retrieve until the dog at heel is at the stage of keenly watching the gun.
al4x
I've found either taking them beating or near where someone else is shooting to start with. That way you are with the dog and can guage the reaction and whether to move closer or not. Beating works well because they don't get that close to the guns and there is so much exciting stuff going on to take their mind off the shooting. Once they associate birds etc with the bangs usually the hard work is done

Sprocket
D. Have you tried speaking to Steve about this? He will usually help people no probs. Alternatively, give me a ring or PM, as you are welcome to come up and we can see how she is developing - bearing in mind I live near Swindon so slightly further to travel than to Steves.
