pandamonia
some time early 2010 when my FAC finally arrives i will be getting a 17 HMR. looks like its going to be the CZ since for the dosh i dont think you can get better, im not convinced Sako, Annie etc are worth twice the price. my question is regarding all the different barrels available. It will be used for hunting and maybe some long range plinking. CZ 452 comes with a Varmint model which looks ideal. Are these heavy barrels better than the skinny ones on the other models? There is also a fluted version now too... is this even better? what about barrel lenght? - 16 inch or 21? i keep reading various things about 18inches being optimum for max speed without being to long. what do u guys think? thanks
CZ550Kevlar
I have a CZ452 Style which is a black composite stock with an all weather barrel, they are a very good all weather rifle and mine has gotten wet lots and had oil in various places and still is in perfect condition, plus you don`t get dings and dents in it as easily as a wood or laminate. For the barrel i have a standard skinny one, makes carrying the thing so much easier with less weight to hold up why make a rifle heavier than it needs to be especially when you are only shooting out to 120 ish yards. Barrel length i had mine chopped down to 18" then by the time you put a moderator on it is still manageable.
pandamonia
yeh i looked at those and i still might go for one, i like the idea of the heavy barrel helping smooth out any shakes for accurate shooting. i really want a 453 model with the better trigger but cant seem to find many in UK
CZ550Kevlar
The 453 has the 2 pull settings on the trigger, you can set either factory pull or you can have the second setting on which is custom pull, when i was looking at buying mine it was £50 ish more for the 453, but i went for the cheaper 452 and had my RFD customise the pull for me on the 452 to the level i wanted it. Wilsons at Ramsgate, Kent has 453`s in stock

stevethevanman
I have a 16" CZ 452 Varmint, and if you go for that, there is no differance in performance noticeably between the barrel lengths in HMR... I havent shot a American CZ .17 HMR, but the varmint is very accurate, check out the Varmintal page on the HMR Varmintal HMR Steve
njc110381
Given the choice I would go for the 16" American. If not that then the 16" Vamint. There is no need for a long barrel on a HMR. I had a 16" 452 American HMR and it shot as well as my mates Sako Quad Why have a big long barrel that will get in the way when it doesn't gain you anything? Also, the shorter barrel is more rigid so the 16" American will probably be as stable as the 20" Varmint?
pandamonia
you lose about 250 fps apparently in the HMR from 22 inches down to 16. 18 inches doesnt lose any speed on the bullet. i think someone did some crono work on it or is this #? CZ550Kevlar
I would spend £325 and get a brand new CZ452 American 20" or an CZ 1716 american 16". Both come with 3 year warranty, At that price you cannot go wrong.
Colster
I wouldn't bother with the 453, I've known people that have had them and never use the custom set while hunting. If the trigger bothers you (mine did, although it's a .22LR, not HMR) get a YoDave trigger off the Bay (or Brookes/SYSS - all the same thing really) As far as 16" goes I find it much better for jumping in and out of 4x4's and especially when you're driving down a road between fields, lot easier to get it all back inside the vehicle than the 20/22.5 Happy hunting
