MC
BASC and GCT both class them as waders. As it would be BASC who wouold have to defend me if I were ever prosecuted for either shooting one on a sunday or for using lead shot then I will take their advice. Guest Callum.
I must admit I do find it quite suspicious that you've suddenly said your mate shot them both You could of said it earlier.
Troosers Too
Aaaagh! Now I'm really confused. I had always thought (or assumed) that they were classed as game. It now seems that this isn't the case. Can they, legally, be shot with lead shot? I'd still leaving them alone with the weather as bad as this, though. Cheers TT
CBL
I thought that the woodcock was "officially" a wading bird in terms of its biological categorisation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodcock), but is also classified as a Game bird - and therefore falls within the remit of the (ancient) Game Laws. They would therefore not be able to be shot on Sundays - due to their Game classification - and would also then fall into hard-weather ban protected status as wading birds. Confusing indeed and that is before you get into the whole county-by-county difference in terms of whether wildfowl shooting is allowed on a Sunday (i.e Norfolk - none allowed; Lincolnshire - allowed if memory serves)! scolopax
Right then, woodcock are a wader, but they are also classified as game. As such in England and Wales they cannot legally be shot on a Sunday. Not too sure about situation in Scotland but if I remember correctly game can be shot on Sundays north of the border, but it is not the done thing. MC
Wrong, The Woodcock is a wader, therefore it can be shot on a sunday where byelaws allow and can be shot with lead again where allowed as it is not a duck or goose.
catweasel
well callum what can i say?,can you read, as if you read the post right i said that me and 2 mates shot 2 woodcock 2 rabbit and a woody, i didn,t say i shot them and if i did i would of said. why shoot something you wont eat, that is why my friend shot them because he likes them, but i will admit that we dont eat crow, i don,t think i could do it but if the farmer gives me the right to shoot them i will, and they will be disposed of properly, not chucked in the hedge, and thanx everyone for their views on this topic it is a bit of a mind bender, but i think the birds will be left alone from now on, i think that is the most sensible option. thank you.
