sambu13
Is there anything one should know about owning/using a semi auto in comparison to using a o/u? im looking at buying one but ive never had one before and wanted to know. cheers Sambu
dunganick
I personally feel they have a time and a place. The main advantages are the 3rd shot, the ease of loading in a hide, they often have large chambers and will reduce the felt recoil in heavier loads. As such they are ideally suited to vermin shooting. What i dont like, they spray empty carts around, They are a bit of a pain when in company (unless your very confident in each others safety) as its hard to make them obviously safe. I also found that i get lots of muzzle flip on every semi i've tried, if this is the mech working or the tendancy for them to have shortish pulls with large amounts of drop im not sure. But to summarise, they have a place in everyones collection and given the choice i would always use one in a hide.

Dekers
Cheers thats really helpfull advice! how do they compare in weight to o/u? They are almost always lighter, lighter felt recoil as well, which can make them easier to shoot, and can be loaded live, ie shoot one/two load one/two with live still in the gun!! As said above, they have a place, I love mine but it is a pain to clean. I can't imagine a situation where I would be without an O/U and Semi though!! Empty cartridges can get ejected an impressive distance-mine will spew them out sometimes 15ft away which does get annoying when they're in a hedge, but as a pigeon gun they're unbeatable.Much less recoil, lightweight and cheap! dunganick
Indifferent. The lightest O/U like the lightweight beretta series are feather weight compared to say the 391 teknys gold i have the use of. But My Miroku MK70 sporter weighs alot more than that. So its very much swings and round abouts. I would look at Beretta as your first port of call. A friend has a Bennelli, which i have to admit is a pretty nice gun. But i still believe Beretta make the best Semi's
