Country_est
Dont know much about them but (and this only MY personal taste) but I just dont like the look of a pistol grip on a s/s gun. Sorry Trev
Cranfield
Midland Gun Co are a reputable Company and have always made good guns, right along the price range. The boxlock side by side in your picture, does not appear to be one of their "best guns". I have seen similar guns sold at auction in very good condition for around £100-£150, Its sad, but people want multichokes, ejectors, under and overs, nowadays. Snotty
i realy like shooting older guns. All my side by sides are hammer all are pistol grip Totally agree, you get so much more for your money with an old hammer gun. You might even get damascene <slobber drool> Pass me a modern pop gun and it feels like I'm holding my cricket bat by the wrong end

Country_est
Hi, Have a great desire for a hammer gun S/S but would only look at ones with straight stocks. (just my personal preference ). Have got pistol grips on by O/U and on Semi Auto but my SLE is straight stock. PS any info on T. Hill & Son as when I was getting my Auto a couple of weeks ago I saw a nice Hammer gun with this makers name on for £395. But as I was buying the Auto and on the lookout for an air rifle I had to pass it up this time. Fell in love with the Hammer guns when shooting a mates Pape hammer a few years ago. berettaboy
looks a lot like either a pigeon or wildfowling gun. Pistol grips were common on both these. The third bite at the top of the reciever backs this up also. If you have an idea of the chamber length it will tell you which of the above is more likely. Long chambers (3") is a fowler else it's a pigeon gun. Looks like an absolute bargain at the prices you paid. Good luck with it

Cranfield
I have never heard of "T Hill & Sons" as a Gunmaker (which doesn't mean too much  ). It could be that "T Hill & Sons" was the Retailer. A lot of older guns were imported from the Continent, especially Spain and Italy and engraved with the Retailers name. berettaboy
Depends on your budget really. Obviously go for one of the 'big three' if you can afford it. Condition is everything. I would look for a good second division Birmingham maker. Get a gunsmith to check it over and check barrel thickness carefully.
A.McCormick
Ok cheers mate. so another Midland may be ok or something. There's an unknown make in my local gun shop and it's £95 but needs new pins. Its a good looking gun and fairly old, i'll try and get some pictures of it. thanks, Alex  Edited September 20, 2005 by ernyha
