.17HMR Balistics VS Hollow points

Recommended Posts

To be honest, with such a light weight bullet such as a HMR..the differance between ballistic tip or hollow point, I dont think will make a differance, you should only really start to worry about aerodynamics at long range centerfire work :)

But as for killing well, if you get a good hollow point, like the speer TNT, although loaded by CCI :) ..you wont really notice a differance between hollows or tips :)

In such a light bullet at this velocity, I tihnk you will find that meat damage is still high on rabbits

You are quite wrong on this one dude, the hollow points drop off rapidly at 140 yards, and i can consistently hit a target out to 200+ with ballistics

The hollows absolutely zip through rabbits and leave very little damage, with the ballistic tip it can be all or nothing, very little or blown to pieces, depends where you hit them.

Wrong again, they do very little visible damage to rabbits and at distances of up to 100 yards on rabbits it may be the answer to less meat damage, how ever you need to be aware that the ping around like a .22 round even after going through a rabbit and for that reason i stopped using them!!!!

I got a box (50) to try, 5 shots and 15 shots and 5 rabbits (first 10 for sighting) later I stopped using them.

Why? they just passed straight through and left me running 100yds plus to dispatch injured bunnies (was too dark for head shots at that range), I've still got them though just in case I ever need them for something bigger like a hare or a fox but I doubt it to be honest, the tipped ones are far better imo.

the same findings here as the people who have had problems, they will give you runners as they are a tiny bullet going very fast that doesn't expand and just punches holes. fieldwandere I wouldn't even use them on foxes I've had them do the same on boiler room shots in one side of the lungs and out through the other shoulder blade. Always found them but you don't expect to need the dog with 50 yard shots. the ballistic tips don't exit foxes so the fox is absorbing all the energy from the round and I've not had one run with them. Same applies to rabbits lack of meat damage shows exactly why they don't put them down as well.

I have kept the last few in case i need to do any humane despatch as close range head shots they will be fine

I disagree totaly all the rabbits I have shot, have suffered great damage from a balistic tip..the TNT round from speer, does also make a very big mess rabbits.

:good: Well I have used several thousand remington ballistic tips, mostly from the landrover and found that in the mid range 50-100 yards the ballistics went straight through without going ballistic.Under 50 yards and they were mush!! Obviously there are exceptions to both.

If you want to eat them then its unequivical...has to be a head shot with ballistics, however hollowpoints you can get away with chest shots and cause very little meat damage, if you are prepared to risk the richochets. ???

There is no point argueing really, just re-read both our posts and we havent used any of the same ammo so its a mute point really, I used cci 20g hollowpoints I used 100 and gave them up as unsafe!!!and remington 17g ballistics I have literally used a couple of thousand so I feel confident talking about them.

Please dont use them on foxes..........they dont have enough impact energy and zip straight through.Do what I did...dispose of them plinking with a decent back stop ???
