AJAX
I've had my gun a while now and I've never done any patterning with the multi chokes supplied. So I've got some targets and a large range of cartridges, shot sizes and loads. I dont want to take any chances with safety so can anyone advize me on what is the biggest shot size and load I can safely shoot through a full choke. I have carts from No 9 shot to BB, AAA, SG. All are lead, my gun is a 12 bore Beretta with 3" chambers. the BBs are 50 gram magnums. I'm especially keen to find the heaviest pellet that will pattern tightly at 35/40 yards. but dont want to blow myself or the gun up !!! It's Rainin White Feathers
perfectly fine as long as you dont go beyond the 3" length of shell, the beretta is magnum proofed, BB or no 1-3's probably will pattern well through a full choke but all guns are different! henry d
do you mean"load my cartridges with" or "load my gun with a cartridge(factory loaded)with" These are critical questions. Furthermore what do you want to shoot? Edited September 24, 2005 by henry d
AJAX
Hi Henry, I meant various shot sizes and load as in the weight of shot contained in a factory loaded cartridge. I will be shooting mainly rabbits, pigeons, corvids, squirrels and a large number of foxes. I'm particularly keen to find the ultimate fox cartridge and choke combination and to generally find out how my gun shoots. I want to be safe as I have had some very conflicting advice recently from other shooters I know. Regards Ajax
High velocity
"I want to be safe as I have had some very conflicting advice recently from other shooters I know." could be at your expense if i were you i would asked at your local gun shop, shooting ground or on this forum where you can get some good advice from experienced guns. AJAX
High Velocity, I was told in a gun shop 1/4 and 1/2 for 'everything' I dont use a shooting ground and so hence 'I am' using this forum to get some advice from experiensed shooters ! regards Ajax
henry d
You will have no problems with any cartridge that you have mentioned(the 3" magnums may rattle your teeth a bit) Best way to pattern a cartridge/choke combo that I have found is to use paper sacks opened up and MEASURE the distance and fire at the centre of the sack. After youve fired 5 or so cartridges,at different sacks, take them back home and using a circle of fencing wire 30" dia place it where you think it covers the centre and check the pattern for gaps(you`ll see huge ones with AAA and SG) Check also for balling, which is either a curved line of shot close to each other or a ******* great tear !This indicates a poor constructed cartridge, but not life threatening to you but can destroy the pattern. If you can get them I would recommend WinchesterXX in shot size 2(yank size near to BB)for foxes as they are buffered and pattern beautifully, and if you get them save me a box
AJAX
Cheers Henry, I was Feeling a bit nervous after being told by a couple of people that to shoot AAA or bigger through anymore than 1/2 choke would result in the barrels bursting !!! S*d that ! I'm also thinking that hevishot in a BB type size should be pretty good on foxes. Have you ever tried it ? Best regards Ajax
henry d
You are having a giraffe aren`t you! Lead only for foxes.....in fact send me the hevi shot and I`ll send you 2 carts in return filled with lead....Deal?

Ajax, Best you not take anymore advice from them, quite obvious they haven't got a clue what they are talking about. Do they shoot An excellent cartridge for Fox. I use it all the time, is Express 1-5/8 oz-No-1's, never failed yet. You have to be able to call them into range though. henry d
Come on then explain why you use hevi shot rather than lead? Do you prefer firing carts that cost many times more than another that does the same job? Do I shoot?-Only since 1974 Call them into range?-No need I use a .
AJAX
I've never used hevishot before but it seems logical that it would be more effective than lead at range if it patterns tightly. hevishot BBs must have much more energy if its heavier than lead BBs and I'd assumed it would give a better range. I'm not too fussed about the price as I'd only fire 20 or 30 per year and the sheer enjoyment I get from calling in and shooting is more than worth £2. a fox. Apparently in the states its often used for coyotes with good results ! Regards Ajax
M ROBSON
HeviShot is awesome on foxes, Geese and just about anything you point it at! Mark.
Bazooka Joe
Do I shoot?-Only since 1974Call them into range?-No need I use a .222 I take it these two comments were in reply to my post. My post was not directed at you, since you weren't the person's giving Ajax the advice. As for the do I shoot, I do, & have since 1970. Call them into range, I get a better kick knowing that I have deceived the Fox, & called it into shotgun range. As for the rifle, that's not a problem either. Bazooka Joe.
