gwb
Hi i know it depends on the parentage, our dog weighs 37lbs and 5 months old, his mum was small we never saw the dad. Is this the right sort of weight as I think he is getting fat [ very thick in the middle]but Im not sure how to tell. Its our first dog and we are taking him to a trainer next week. Lloyd90
you should be able to feel the ribs but not really see them Some dogs are just bigger than others. My lab bitch is bigger than 75% of the labs both dogs n bitches on our shoot today, and shes only 8 months at the moment.

casts_by_fly
sounds a little thick for a thinly built lab. the ribs are the easiest check. Looking from the side you should be able to see definition around where the ribs should be, but you shouldn't see individual ribs. When you feel the dogs ribs you should be able to feel individual ribs easily. When you look from the top down, there should be a noticable definition to the back hips also. Wide at the ribs, taper in a little behind the ribs, and then a little wider at the haunches. Is the dog a chow hound? Thanks, Rick
gwb
Hi Rick Sortry for the late reply, yes he will eat anything. Took the dog to a well known trainer in our area. She said he looked ok. have done the checks you mention I think he maybe slightly over but not too much to worry about as he is only 5 months old cheers
