Ballymac
Hi guys set the larsen trap yesterday as I got a call bird from shooting buddy. Had one caught at 8/30 this morning and two others looking interested in it. Have you started yet, let's here how you are getting on and what sort of bait you find works well. Afew things that I have heard is good to use is a few frozen chips, or a slice of bread, but it needs to be buttered I think it is a bit early to be baiting with eggs so go on do yoou just use a gutted rabbit or some sort of road kill. I have put in 2 silver foil dishes like the chinese takeaway use with some gravy and leftovers. The idea is that magpies being nosey etc will want to check out the shiny object (if the sun shines on it) and when they see the food will go for it. Also how often do you move your trap, assuming you can move it.
rjimmer
I don't think it is fair on the call birds before April. Dead new-born white rabbits are the most effective bait I have ever used. Slices of white bread around the trap would be good for long-range attraction. I tried day-old chicks last year but they were useless, and ended up using eggs to get the first one. Catamong
Yes, it's still too early for Larsen trapping, as the call bird will die if you get a sharp frost. Most guys I know don't start until the end of March, that's plenty early enough. Cat.
